a lot of people think the amazon kindle is pointless.

"GET A REAL BOOK FAGGOT" etc.

but there are some things you should know if you hold this opinion.

1. IPADS/TABLETS DO NOT COVER THE NEEDS OF A KINDLE

kindles can be charged in an hour, and the battery life is around a month. that means you can leave it on for a ****ing month. can you leave your shitty tablet on for a month?

2. REAL BOOKS AREN'T BETTER

and they're expensive. and space-consuming. i don't want to go into details because it's against the rules, but let's just say it's just as easy to get free books on a kindle as it is to get free movies on your computer. this means the payback time for your kindle is roughly 4 books.

3. YOU CAN HAVE PDFS, EPUB, MOBI FILES ON A KINDLE

that means your lecture notes, past papers for revision, revision guides, exercise questions etc. kindles are the gods of revision and academia.

and last but not least,

4. THE DISPLAY IS EXCELLENT

ever tried to use your shitty ipad in the sun? all you can see is the ****ing sun. kindles have screens like paper, so the sun illuminates it instead of making it harder to read.

actually **** it imma carry on

5. YOU CAN READ BIG BOOKS IN PUBLIC WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE A MASSIVE PRICK

ever tried to read war and peace on your way to the train? you'll probably miss your train cos it's weighing you down too much.

6. YOU CAN READ WHATEVER YOU WANT WITHOUT ANYONE KNOWING

"but laid-to-waste, how will i meet my true love? if i'm sitting in a cafe with a kindle the love of my life may pass by without commenting how she reads the same book!"

if the bitch is worth anything, she'll stop and complement your kindle. you don't wanna marry a book reader.

7. IT LEGITIMATELY ENCOURAGES AND ENFORCES THE READING OF BOOKS

the sleek, durable, sturdy and mobile device looks appealing enough that it actually helps you finish that book you never finished reading cos you lost your bookmark and now you don't know what page you were on so you were annoyed

8. IT HAS A DICTIONARY

point to a word. click define. boom. word has been defined. if you didn't have a kindle, what would you need to define a word in one of your shitty 20th century book structures? another ****ing book.

9. IT HAS AN AUTOMATIC BOOKMARK FEATURE

enough said.

oh, and don't pay £50 extra for the paperwhite version unless you're bill gates.

all hail mighty kindle.

I've got the Kindle app on my tablet and I'm perfectly happy with it. Don't particularly miss books, although it does mean that I spend most of my day looking at a screen. Rather that than having to move around a massive heavy box of books I've already read every time I move flat.

if you think kindles have a 'screen' then you've never used one.

My Dad has one and likes it a lot. I still prefer books though.

that's cos it's your dad's. get one, call it your own, and it will be much better.

My only complaint with it is the selection of the free books, at least from what I've seen of it there's way too many Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey knockoffs

How does a big book make you a 'massive prick'?

This thread is already circling the drain.

that's like saying the selection of free movies on the internet is that which is available on youtube. think outside the box and you can literally get any book for free

I don't know if you mentioned it (didn't read olol) but the Klip Me extension on Chrome and Firefox is awesome. You can send wirelessly any article from the internet to your kindle in seconds. I send tons of essays/revision notes to read on the bus.

Also there are tons of free classics to download. Recently I've read The Picture of Dorian Grey, The 39 Steps, Great Expectations and Heart of Darkness all for freeeeeeee.

I use the dictionary pretty much everyday as well >_>

I've been wanting to buy one for a while now, like you said, I can't read well in the sun with my tablet. But I also want a cheap one cause I have a tablet and d on't really need another one, just a good ebook reader that I can take outside on a sunny day and have a nice read.
#16
Well as long as I take care of them my books will easily last another 100 years. Can your kindle do that?

yes

Just remember, you can wipe semen off a screen, but it will stain a book.

Honestly, I don't read enough to have the desire for a Kindle. Even if I did, ehhhh I don't know.

why on earth would you need the same books for 100 years?

say you buy 10 books a year for 100 years, so you own 1000 books for 100 years. say an avg of $10/book, that's £10k. a kindle is roughly $100. even if you have to buy one every 5 years year for 100 years, you're still saving roughly $8k and you don't have to waste 1000 books' worth of space in your house. plus, a $100 kindle can store 1100 books

I don't like reading from a bright little screen. I like the feel of holding a book, the smell, turning the pages. When you finish a book it feels so good, but when you finish one on a kindle it's just "meh".

Why would I use a kindle for anything other than reading for enjoyment? They're nearly useless for rigorous studying/highlighting/note taking. You don't have the ability to flip through pages as quickly or easily like you do with a textbook. It's more of a frustration than a convenience wen it comes to that.

Try being a student of the social sciences where you frequently must flip through tons of books for a specific topic. It's easier to write/make notes in real books, it's easier (and more fun) to highlight in real books, it's easier to skim through real books for relevant topics, it's easier to cite real books, it's easier to hold a real book and know where you might need to find things. It's also better to have a bunch of books sitting on a shelf so you can show off how smart you are too your friends.

Some of us can't afford your #babylonian pricey multi-purpose kindles that are basically just tablets, we have to opt for the cheap kindle that is only for reading books.

This is a pretty crazy thing brad, but you can own and kindle and real books as well.

Assuming you mean the newer, more expensive Kindle models that are basically tablets anyway?

I'm about to buy the kindle paperwhite... I need counter arguments/ reinforcement to see if I should actually buy it.

Go.

Actually I think I just will buy it, I have the money and want to read comfortably without having to block the sunlight from my tablet, and I have no space for books so, I guess it's an obvious choice.

nice advertisement.

my argument for a standard button kindle instead of the paperwhite;

button models are genuinely better than the touchscreen paperwhite models. the touchscreen isn't very responsive and it feels tacky and cheap. the buttons are 100% responsive.

also, you can buy a case with an attached light if you really want the backlight. if you have the money, buy the paperwhite, but try out the touchscreen first and then try out the buttoned model. if they made a buttoned paperwhite model i'd be on it instantly.

Is the back light necessary? that's what I was thinking, cause if not then I would just buy the base model if it has the same readability in sunlight as the paperwhite.

you really don't do as much reading in the dark as you think. you get tired quickly. and if you do, get a lamp or a case with an attached light, they're much better and cheaper.

it does have the same readability in any room that has light, but that's just me. i don't have very good eyesight and this model is perfect for me as it is. the paperwhite is literally just for people that wanna spend £50 on the A4-paper look. it is very pleasant, don't get me wrong, but i guess it's about how much you value £50

The more I think about it the more I want one. I agree with all of OP's reasons plus I just hate handling books. This sounds incredibly lazy but it's such a hassle to hold a big book in the right light and turn the pages. And I gotta be careful with the spine and all. And even though books are cheap, free is even better.
I would be more afraid of it breaking/getting stolen though.

I wonder if it'd be possible to read comics on it?
