So I'm thinking of retubing my Line 6 before the end of the summer. Starting to get that background whistle and I want some higher gain tubes in there anyway. My question is, if I'm running my POD directly into the power amp, do I need to retube the preamp at all? Do I even need the tubes in there?

Well 1 of the 12ax7's is the PI for the power amp, so at least 1 of them will need to be changed out.

I don't get why you would need higher gain tubes if you run the thing into the power amp.
I mean you already have all the gain you could possibly want in the pod, and it's not like the amp will not run out of headroom already if you turn the volume up enough.

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

Sovteks are cheap and I like the sound haha. Besides Groove Tubes are a scam and Sovteks are my only other option buying in store.

Do you have a local electronic components shop?
Not anything related to guitar, just an electronic components shop?

There I found the best values for tubes - I got a JAN Philipps 12au7 for around $10.
So yeah have a look there if you have such a thing around you.

If I was doing preamp tubes I was going to do JJs and the 6L6s for the power section would be Sovteks. I'll give those a look though.

I re-tubed my old SV HD100 with Tung-sol 5881 reissue and they sounded way better IMO.

I haven't bought a tube in an actual store for probably 20 years. Tubes aren't the sort of thing you need to see before you buy them, so why go into a store? If you don't need them immediately in an emergency situation I don't see the point. There's this thing called the internet, you may want to check it out.

I could imagine those tubes working well in a SV, Rob. They're very dry, I could imagine them taking some of the muddiness out of it. Normally, I'd just say "JJ 6L6" but in that amp, I'm not so sure.

Well I play a lot of higher gain stuff. I find a lot of the guys like like use amps (or amp models) with EL34s, but I prefer the sound of 6L6. I was just going to do the Sovtek 6L6s either way with JJ 12AX7s.

Maybe I'll buy online. I'm just a stingy **** who doesn't like to pay shipping.

I used to think I only liked 6L6 amps, but the circuit is what makes the difference. I have an amp with 6L6's and I have an amp with EL34's. I also have a amp that will take any powertube

But you don't mind paying for a store's over-inflated commercial property value and the overheads that come with it?
Even with postage you should come out in front.

Yeah I just put together what I'd need on Valve Queen and it's like $65. However, in the 6L6 vs EL34s, my amp came with 6L6s, I don;t want to have to rebias it that much myself.

You'd probably have to do more than that and you'd be playing it fast and loose with the heater winding on the power transformer unless you can get the specs on the PT. EL34's draw more heater current and you'd probably have to change the screen resistor too. Stick with 6L6's or 5881.

You would have to do mods to your amp for EL34 to work in it

I liked the 5881's in mine. They had a thick, throaty sound not like the 6L6 in it, but a little different. Cathbards statement of sterile might be what it was about them I liked. They also had a nice old school crunch to them

Most probably. You're gonna make me look up the schematic aren't you?
But that isn't what I'd be scared of most. How much heater current can the power transformer handle? That's the question. You don't want to have to buy a new power transformer.
Stick with what you know will work. Going from EL34's to 6L6's is pretty easy; the other direction, not so much.

If you find the schematic for the amp let me know, I briefly tried looking to see if there was anything I could do quick to mod it.

It's pointless unless you can find the specs to the PT. It could easily be a lot more than simply swapping a screen resistor.
