i am buying one more guitar, and that will be it for a while. i have the cash now, and i am going to do it now, but i am not rushing too much. the rest of the cash is going somewhere else and that is my personal thing. also i have capped out my music fund this year after this already put in $9000 in this year, so one grand and one guitar. but... here is the issue. a tele or a strat. i have a 1995 MIM strat that has served me well, and just bought a MIA tele last week used in tobacco sunburst.

so i am getting ONE more guitar a tele or strat.

my list:

it will be Fender, not flexible at all.
$1100 tops to my doorstep.
i will only buy used
NOT through GC's used site, they have screwed me twice.
it will be in my hands the one i buy.
Tampa FL is the best CL to here.
only single coils. pickups will likely be swapped

skip down here if you don't want to read it all the way though

my main genre for this is blues, more along blues rock, but really anything around there. must be good clean and with a bit of OD as well.

the problem is should i buy another strat or another tele? i

option 1 - the strat - like my strat a lot, but i don't think i use it like most people. i don't like positions 2 and 4. the bridge pickup doesn't get a ton of use, its too bright. i know i could do some wiring and throw another tone pot in there or one of a dozen things. i pretty much use the neck pickup and the middle for a little more grit. also the trem is decked, springs all the way in. i wish it didn't have a tremolo. i have the bar, i just don't use it. however i love the neck position, great for some smooth cleans and with some of my amps its easy to get edge of breakup (believe it or not it loves the tiny terror channel on my dual terror) which is where i like being. that is usually on the middle pickup for that.

option 2 - the tele - its a 2011, just got it last week. i just finished setup and got everything perfect and damn its sweet. i am a big fan of brad paisley's tone and guitar playing (not necessarily his songs i am about 50/50 on what he puts out). obviously he plays a tele through the doc z's. and i love it. i like the neck pickup too, but the bridge just twangs away and the right amount of heat. the one i have already will be getting dimazio twang Kings both neck and bridge. i have played the same combination and love it, which is good to know. the other thing i could do is make is add a strat middle position and have a nashville tele, which i won't buy that way but hopefully its already routed.

i really like them both, pretty much relatively equally but i am just not entirely sure what to get.

what i want is mainly your opinion and sway a little a bit i just am unsure what would do me best.

do you feel i would be better off with a strat or a tele
. this isn't finalizing, just some good opinions.

just to restate one more thing. Fender only. USA only. may just be a just to get a standard again for less money.

thanks to the people who read all the way through, sorry for being so long winded.

This sounds like a coin flip to me.
If I were you and wanted By God Fender, I'd go to Riverside CA and drop into Wild West guitars and check out their walls. Easily one of the biggest stockers of higher-end Fenders (no junk) I've seen. They've got some used stuff in there as well. There's also the Fender folks near my office in Corona. The Fender Museum is literally across the parking lot.

But if you're just trying to choose between a Strat and a Tele and you already have one of each, I think it's going to boil down to a coin flip.

Here are interesting Fenders to be had at Elderly Instruments and Guitars & Effects .com, for example:

I know that one of those is outside your stated budget a smidge, but it IS a Tele with a middle pickup already in place.

Given what you said about not liking your Strat's tremolo and your Tele, I'd buy a Tele...and start saving up for a Nile Rodgers Strat or a hardtail Stratclone.

the first two are very interesting, that strat would be a lot better with SSS for me as far as taste in visually but, i don't use the bridge pickup on a strat anyway so it is just a plus.

the tele looked nice, but i don't want chambered anyway.

but thanks for the links. i really would have a hard time getting a used guitar i haven't played. i would trust elderly probably more than GC, but i just want to get a feel.

is there anything better on a 1994 than more recent MIA's? i really like my 1995 MIM, i feel like it is better than the other dozen i owned that were generally newer.

__________

what is your thought on getting a tele and turning it into a nashville tele and throw a SC in the middle. i haven't ever played one/heard one, if i used a strat pickup in the middle, how would it do strat tones?

I wish I could help you- besides that Fender, I have seen several Teleclones out there with that configuration- Tradition, Fret-King, Reverend, etc.- but haven't played any either. But it is a common enough variant that it has to have some merit.

And FWIW, Reverend's Six-Gun- their most Strat-like guitar- had one incarnation that had a Telecaster bridge pickup, and I know THAT guitar was pretty popular.

tanks danny. its almost frustrating buying guitars these days. factories closing, changing countries of production varying production quality based on country/factory. import/export ,etc. different prices in different countries. here you can find a mesa MKIV for $800 ($775 for the one i got) and its worth $4k in Australia.

i am not seeking rarities, i just want to get the best ______ for the $$$$ ( ) if i pick up a standard for $600-$700 maybe just do that, and say **** it and throw new pickups in it and go from there.

i always liked the concept of the nashville tele though. and i am good with a router worst case.

Well then, why not just find a good MiM or MiA and rout one more hole in it? A good body shouldn't cost too much, and if you add in some killer pups, you could have a real screamer.

If you go that way, though, I'd be strongly tempted to go with a custom pickup builder like Pete Biltoft at Vintage Vibe. That way, you can communicate to him exactly the tones you're seeking, and he will be able to deliver you a set that will do exactly that.

And- surprise, surprise- Vintage Vibe Pickups are typically under $100 each.

I have bought a guitar from a seller on Reverb, but not G&E. However, I did communicate with G&E last year regarding a Reverend Manta Ray Goldtop LE. It got bought before I could pull the trigger, but the person I dealt with seemed polite. Since the guitar was being bought on layaway, I asked if they would contact me if the sale fell through for any reason. They said they would, but the buyer didn't flake out.

As for the B-Bender, I just found out about those recently myself. Essentially, it's a nifty little single-string tremolo. It is attached only to the b-string (hence the name). It works by being attached to the strap pegs- when you wiggle the guitar up & down, the b-bender stretches the b-string.

Weird, I know, but apparently pretty popular among Tele players...and once you hear it, a lot more country licks make sense!

This thing was invented back in the late '60's by Clarence White and Gene Parsons. Linda Ronstadt had two guitar players who used it in her bands, but the song you've probably heard it used in most often is Peaceful Easy Feelin' by the Eagles. Bernie Leadon, who was a Ronstadt alum and a founding Eagle was/is a master of bendy licks.

I always thought the B Bender was an overly complicated hunk of machinery designed to screw up a perfectly good telecaster, but there are those who swear by them (and at them). These days Bigsby, Hipshot and Duesenberg have versions that will bend multiple strings and that can be activated by your palm. There are other versions that can operate more than one string (up to three, independently) depending on whether you haul back on the neck, bounce the guitar up and down, etc. I think Keith Richards and Brad Paisley both use variations, which explains some of the stylized Tele wiggling that typifies their playing occasionally.

I was stopping in to make sure to check out a lot of MIJ stuff, I adore my MIJ foto-flame strat, it is my favorite guitar that I have owned (and it beats out a lot of the more expensive guitars I have played in terms of comfort). You can probably stretch your dollars a lot further going MIJ, I know I paid $350 for mine used and it kicks the crap out of similarly priced MIM and even some of the lower end MIA stuff.
I'm just a kickin' and a gougin' in the mud and the blood and the beer.

For Classic Rock/Blues I think everyone needs to own one good Tele. Not 5 Teles but one good one and I so love the stock USA pickups I can't imagine changing them. Both pickups are just perfect IMO. Smooth woman tone and classic Tele bite and articulation.

I can see a use for more than one Strat though. A traditional SSS has a place in your quiver and recently I have been jonesing for a HSH config. Some of the places I play have nasty hum from cheap lighting dimmers and an HSH Strat would be a great solution I think. Andy Timmons has used this setup to good effect. A humbucker in the bridge position is a slam-dunk to expand the possibilities of Strat tone and one at the neck would open up the whole guitar when you need noise cancellation. I may get a Mexi Tele and do a pair of lil 59s in HSH config for versatile, classic rock/blues tone in a low cost roadhouse gig axe. I hate taking precious and expensive gear to rowdy biker bars.

Yeah- the G-bender attaches to the belt, and is activated by pulling the guitar away from your body.

Look on YouTube, and you'll see a bunch of videos with guys playing Teles with both a B and G bender...however some reverse the attachments. IOW, the G bender is attached to the straplock, and the B bender is attached to the belt.

They are not giving it away but it has all the right stuff and she is a looker IMO.

A "B" Bender Tele is strictly a country music tool and it has it's place but not playing the blues. If I had one I would use it maybe 2 songs/night covering classic country. I'd have to pass.

As much as I love genuine American Fender Strats and their sounds...I would get a Carvin Bolt. Fender strats cost too much money for what features they have and their build quality. Not so much build quality as it is features. Check out the Carvin Bolt man, I know it may not be what you want to hear, but for the money that you say you're lacking, and wanting a USA made "Strat" I think it may be the perfect compromise, and they're available brand new for much less than 1100 bucks.

There have been a lot of stunning Carvin NGDs on UG the past couple of years, and I personally know a half-dozen Carvin owners- all blissfully happy with their axes.

Imagine, for instance, doing a Carvin T in spalted maple, like this guy did his Holdsworth.

i did price out the carvin, for what i wanted and the unnamed guitar i think will suit me better.

the difference was $200 less from carvin from what i wanted, but the unnamed guitar has much better pickups already installed, which carvin didn't offer. so it would have been a wash.

and i feel better with fender.

as much shit as i will get, i am not a cork sniffer, but i like staying with the main brands. gibson, ibanez, fender, peavey (their wolfgangs are excellent) ... etc.

I won't give any shit, man- guitar ownership is personal.

My collection is officially in the 20s now, and the biggest name brands on the list are Dean and Ovation.

OTOH, one of my best buddies plays nothing but Fender Stratocasters.

congrats on getting to the 20's. i am at over 20 for sure, but i don't know exactly. a month ago i was going through cases, and found two guitars i forgot i owned or thought i sold. i am going to get one more prestige, one more strat and that is the end of my buying guitars.

yea. you are level headed though compared to the people who have a stroke over an agile vs. gibson. i don't have anything to prove. you come across similarly if i am reading in proper context which i am sure i have.

...for now!

Despite my claims to the contrary- "I want to be the next Scott Chinery."- I never thought I'd get past the 5 I've had since 2003. Then 2012 hit, and it was like a dam burst!

I'm still jealous of your amp collection, though.

Thanks.

I won't claim I was ever thus- age & experience have brought wisdom and patience. Well...a little more than I had in my 20's at least.

But by the time I picked up the guitar, I was already on a divergent path, at least in terms of picking my pissing contests. When you consider that, in a big city full of Fender, Gibson, PRS, Ibanez, Shechter, B.C. Rich and Gretsch products, I went and had my favorite local music store special order me a pair of Deans? Well, I'm clearly not interested in the squabbles of the True Believers.

I only own 8 guitars and 8 might still be too many to play regularly. I only use 3 every week but I have a few personal history examples that cannot be sold.

i have mine split across my two houses. i typically move things around a lot though. i play at least 5 a week, do i need those specfic guitars every week, no. i could get by with three (LP, prestige ibby, tele) but i would feel some handicap among my music.

Used 52 AVRI Telecaster. It's all a telecaster is.

Best quality/value before CS models and you'll not be sorry.
