I'm interested in miscellaneous recording and later designing. What would be a good advice for recording something like a cat scratching a chair - completely random events. For obvious practical reasons, I can't walk a round with a condenser mic in my pocket with a pop filter.

Is there something small, decent quality, and inexpensive? I'm a assuming something entry level, or some type of popular industry standard.
The zoom handled recorders are quite good.
Also, if you have an iphone you can get yourself a rode xy mic to attach to that, I don't remember how they called it.

Thoungh sound designing is mostly done with synth nowdays sice you have a lot more possibilities, and it's hella expensive and more difficult to do something of a nice quality with a handled recorder or even a studio.
Name's Luca.

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.
