So, like, are you guys not allowed to boast about yourselves?

Is that why you guys are such a quiet bunch?

I do not know what that thing means. Source: lived 21 years in Finland

Hmmm makes sense. I think it might be a real thing, at least among dumb old folks. Like if you're born into a ghost town, you could be frowned upon if you move to the capital city for your university studies instead of taking care of the family farm.

It's not a 'legal' law, it's an 'apparent statement of fact, deduced from observation', kinda law.

This explains it pretty well.

Seems to me like its a "law" that says "everyone is equal".

Yeah, I suppose it can be interpreted in that way. To me it looks like it has some similarities with communism.

Well, shit.

It explains why they're such socialist obama-loving commie-wannabe bastards.

"Jantelagen" has no relevance whatsoever. Which is unfortunate, because Swedes would definitely benefit from some of that mentality.

It is mostly about modesty. That's why we frown and complain (behind their backs ofc) if someone is acomplished and he/she isn't modest about it. But that's mostly it.

As the wikipedia article says;

You're not to think you are anything special.
You're not to think you are as good as we are.
You're not to think you are smarter than we are.
You're not to convince yourself that you are better than we are.
