I've been getting crackling/Popping sounds coming from my amp (not from a loose guitar input/bad cable). Naturally I started digging around UG. Though it seems to be an unresolved issue, a lot of guys suggest checking the pre-amp tubes. The amp being about 6 years old with all factory tubes, I decided to replace them entirely. I swapped in 3 brand new 12AX7s on the fly before a jam one evening. Amp worked fine, but still the occasional popping. The following week I picked up 4 new Power tubes and replaced those, Switched the amp on and let them heat up a few mins, and began to play at low volume. The amp sounded noticeably better, but died shortly after. Im guessing I blew a fuse (It's ceramic, hard to tell). I'd like some input before going any further.

Note*
1) Amp calls for 6L6GC power tubes. I got a Matched set of 6L6GED Does this matter?(music store here has very limited Tube selection, I'm lucky to get those 4.
2) I got a replacement pack of fuses(same rating) but they're transparent, not ceramic. does this matter?

You need GC, not GED. Order them from one of the dozen online tube stores.

Yeah, I don't know the specifics, but I think it is the plate voltage diffrences that makes them not swappable

Either way you need the right type of tube

The fuse should be fine, as long as it is the same rating and it fits

Damn, dude at the store said Those letters just mean where they're made...I was skeptical, but got em anyway...what a sucker, lol

did I damage the amp though by doing that? It did shut off on me...
Also, I spent the last of my weeks pay on the GEDs, Will I have any trouble returning them, or did I ruin them?

No, my mistake, those 6L6 are fine for what your using. I was thinking of the old 5881.

So something went wrong, maybe the tubes (new is only a word)

After more reading into it, I'm finding the GED should be fine(unless there's a bad one in there somewhere). My concern now is why did the fuse blow? and will my new ones be ok in there?

Thanks, You've been more than helpful. I'm going to go inspect all the new tubes and try again. I've read glass fuses are fine as long as they're the same rating.

any way to test the ones I've got right now as I'm looking at them?

I never noticed it before, but they all have blurred dark spots on the sides of them. Also, They were sealed in the box I got them in, but I'm noticing the logos are red on 3 tubes, but brown on the other?

Not really. If they are frosted white looking then the vacuum has been broken. That is the only visual test I know of. but it may have a short in it that is not visible or something else

I'm far from an expert, but that is just some general knowledge I've picked up over the years

Not frosted or white, but dark blurs on the sides. The original tubes had the same thing only on the bottoms of them.

So, I checked and re-seated all pre-amp and power tubes. Replaced the fuse and flipped the amp on. All tubes are glowing pretty good, except the brown labeled one(almost no glow at all). So I'm guessing that's the problem.

Get some Electrical contact cleaner, spray it on the tube pins (do this on every tube socket) and work it in and out of the socket a few times. See if that helps at all.

I just tried switching them around. All good except the brown one. My guess is someone bought the same box and put an old one back in and returned it to the store...Then I bought it...
I put the factory ruby's back in, fired it up, and all is well...

6L6GED are the Chinese Groove Tubes that they are claim are made using "old GE machinery." They conspicuously don't say what this machinery is, it could be a spanner.

Just buy JJ 6L6GC's. The GED's have scam written all over them.

Yeah, I read that too, haha. But like I said, the selection I had to work with was sub-par. Thought I was doing good by buying local. Lesson learned. These are going back tomorrow and I'll order something better.
