Hey everyone,

So I'm looking to buy a guitar but wanted some input from you guys.
I found some sg's and les pauls on craigslist that caught my eye.
Now, I am going to try the guitars out before buying one but I thought you guys could give me your input as to which might be worth my buck.

I am into old school thrash, metal, punk. etc.
Playing out of a combo 5150 (212)

All right here is what i got to say:
I own a Gibson SG special (original with 490T & 490R) yo can play anything with that thing and it will sound JUST right. +1 for the black one +2 for the dark cherry and the burstbuckers noticeable more output than de 490's
I own An Epiphone exactly with that DiMarzios, believe me there is nothing out there that sounds so Boomy ( fully bottom end) like a Super distortion in a les paul. the combination of the two is lovely. the PAF itself is a tone monster, the super distortion is the name of the eighties metal man. The highs are nice, and even with extreme distortion you can hear note by note. Outstanding clearance (both of them) when rolling back the volume knob
Finally I own a Les paul Traditional and before that I've played a bunch of Les paul's studio (no one of them sounded like they should. So if you're on a budget and playing that kind of stuff I wouldn't use a that les paul unless with DiMarzios or EMG pickups.
For me It's the Epi or the SG's

I like the epi and the 2010 SG standard. The epi is extremely nice, and with those upgrades it would be fantastic. SGs feel great and the guy selling it is giving the case as well. Two great deals.

You have some great choices, TS. I would not enjoy being in your situation.
I'm always screwing with my rig. Muh chilluns:
Warmoth NRFR strat JB/Jazz
Mesa Boogie Royal Atlantic, Diezel 2x12
Turbo tuner, J Cantrell wah, Alesis 3630
Green Rhino, Wampler Velvet, Strymon ElCap/Lex, Phase 45

all over priced. the Epi you like is far from a bargain you are pretty much paying full price for the upgrades. anything over $500 is to much. I'd offer the guy with the SG special with locking tuners $400 as that would be a decent deal.

A new Epiphone like that is $500. A set of DiMarzios is $160. The set of new Gotoh tuners is $70. 4 new pots is $20, a new switch is $20. Most people charge around $300 for a refinish for a solid color. Being that's a burst, you can add another $100. The solid brass tailpiece is $25, and the bridge is also $25. That's $1,220.

Knock off about $200 off the final value for being used. Another $200 because its an Epi. What you have left is about $820 and the guy is selling for $700. Even if you knocked off another $100, he's still selling it for $20 less.

he doesn't state that the guitar was refinished just mentions NOS finish which may just sound good for selling purposes. I believe that perhaps the finish was dulled down a bit to simulate an older guitar. as for the other parts well sure when bought new would cost that much but this is a used guitar therefor the parts are used to. a used epi LP is $300 all day anywhere. getting another $200 for upgrades is doing good. why do you think that many recommend saving the original parts for selling as you take a beating on the upgrades. last year I bought a MIM Strat that had an LSR Roller Nut, sperzel locking tuners, steel block and graphtech saddles installed (pretty sure pups are different as well but haven't taken it apart to find out for sure) what I pay $300 at GC (they wanted $350 but I grumbled).

Looks good. That case alone I think is like $150? Something like that. An epihone explorer is $500, I think its a fair deal.
