its a old ampeg, i don't know what model. i paid $30 for a year or two ago, single 12". it has no real labeling or indication of what it is and a can't find schematics.

how do i tell what the tube does? i know in most cases it is considered useless (valvetronics, mosfets, etc).

the tube does get a good amount of current going as it gets burning hot.

*there is one thing i think though, you turn it on and it fades on slowly like a tube amp. could it be a early gain stage tube? but i don't know. i can't get schematics anywhere.

but i think it is a A(something)70 and is an ampeg.

does it matter, not really just curious. it gets godly cleans though. just as good as my music man. sounds a bit more american voiced.

It's a 12ax7, right? I had a cheap Kustom back when, it had a single 12ax7 that acted like a v1. I know I'm not much help, but I don't know what else you would want to do with a single tube.

yea 12ax7, t would make sense that it was at V1 because it is much more sensitive to what you put into it.

some amps use it for a phase inverter (valvetronics) or i couldn't imagine what. that one does, i think its a PI.

About the only thing you can do is trace the circuit and see what it feeds off and into and whether the output is the plate or the cathode. If it comes off the plate it's a gain stage, if the cathode it's a current source. I'm simplifying it a tad but that's generally true.

i just looked at it and you appear to be right. it was like scraped/scratched off. i rehoused the head and have a 1x15" cab i need to finish for it.

i don't know how i missed an X, its a pretty common letter for model.

i will see if i can find a pic of it before the rehousing.

No, I just googled to see if I could find it. The only schematics I could find had to be purchased. Sounds like it works like the Valvestate.

I'd be interested to know, too. I've never found any of the pedals and preamps that incorporated a single 12AX7 to be much other than a modeling/solid state gizmo with the tube used mostly as a marketing device/advertising bullet point/night light.

yea i agree, most of it is really bullshit with the single tube amps (and blackstar).

i tried something earlier, i swapped tubes. sovetk to JJ. the tone changed a bit. enough to wonder if it is legitimately in the use of the tube.

another things that makes me wonder, is that it is relatively pick responsive, more than most SS amps (with the exception of my musicman)

http://wurlitzerboston.myshopify.com/products/ampeg-ax-70-1x12-hybrid-tube-guitar-amplifier

also looks like the tube in there may have been original.

First of all "marketing ploy" doesn't mean the tube does nothing. It means that they could have accomplished the same thing without a tube, but decided that a tube would help marketing. I think a lot of people hear marketing ploy and think that the tube does nothing but act as decoration.
#14
It is true. Even in a Valvestate, if you change tubes, you will hear a change. However, it is surrounded by an abomination. A single tube can't save a pile of shite like that.
Evidence in point - the old MOSFET lead did a far better job without the tube. Why? Because it wasn't a pile of shite.
