Hey I am looking to buy a new amp. I have a budget of £170 (max) for a practice amplifier. I am looking for a versatile amp that plays a range of genres to a decent standard.

Currently I am stuck choosing between the Roland Cube 40 XL and the Peavey Vypyr VIP 1

I'm wondering which amp you guys would recommend

Other amps in consideration include the:
  • Orange Crush PiX CR20LDX
  • Line 6 Spider IV 30
  • Blackstar ID:Core 40

Both are pretty good choices actually. The Roland does a better clean Blackface and Vox tone, the Vypyr may be better for heavier stuff. Play through each and decide.
"Your sound is in your hands as much as anything. It's the way you pick, and the way you hold the guitar, more than it is the amp or the guitar you use." -- Stevie Ray Vaughan

"Anybody can play. The note is only 20 percent. The attitude of the motherfucker who plays it is 80 percent." -- Miles Davis

And both the Roland Cube and the Peavey Vypyr are better than any of the other 3 amps you mentioned.
Don't get any of those; the Orange Crush PiX is mediocre, the Line6 Spider is awful, and even the Blackstar is pretty "meh" compared to the Cube and Vypyr.

Isn't the vip1 the smallest one with the 8" speaker? I haven't tried it, but if so, I'm guessing the cube would be better. If you can stretch to one of the bigger vypyrs then it's going to be a judgement call.
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.
