I may be a little behind the times, but I really don't know...

Anytime someone uses the word hipster this is what I picture:

It just doesn't seem to make sense in context though..?

a hipster is a special kind of dildo. Only fat women use them. Very hard to come by these days. I heard some small coffee shops sell them

weird...

"Hipster" is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else's authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself. It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you've probably sensed the pattern on your own).

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, "ironic" Them.

etc

Agreed.

Some history on the term:

The term originated in the '20s, when there were many not-well-known jazz bands playing at all sorts of venues. The "hipsters" were the people who knew these bands, visited their concerts often, and were from time to time the reason why these jazz bands became popular, rather than others. This carried on through the '30s and '40s ofcourse, but the term's mainstream use died together with the popularity of jazz in favour of "greasers" and Rock & Roll, etc.
A few years ago however, with the "death of pop music", more people have become more interested in the underground music scene and often find themselves relying on "hipsters" to tell them which bands to check out and which bands to ignore, just like in the '20s. The difference here though, is that the term became more than a name; it became a culture.

This new-fangled culture is where above quoted post comes in.

this is about the best reply you will get

though now that term has itself been co-opted for marketing purposes which refers to a particular style -- a quick image search will confirm the latter while a general acceptance of the descriptor of self (contrast this to a denial a few years ago) confirms the former. and now it's basically a characteristic of hordes of young, middle to upper class adults who typically live in gentrified areas (basically san fransisco).

it was a bullshit term then. now it serves no real purpose other than to describe a fashion (which i guess still sticks to its roots in that no one can really say what it is)

They're people that wear clothes that I would burn and listen to music that I don't like.

The only actual descriptive thing I can think of are those thick rimmed glasses. I can just about put up with people who need glasses wearing them but people who wear them with either fake or no lenses...well, I want to punch those people.

Honestly, I consider anyone a hipster if they use the term "Mainstream" as a negative adjective.
#32
I've always thought a hipster is someone who bases their preferences and opinions by what they (and, more importantly, others) perceive as "hip", while completely disregarding practicality or their personal, actual preferences and opinions. A hipster may secretly love Nickelback, but they would never ever admit to it. A hipster will where uncomfortable clothes if the clothes are perceived as hip.
