Hello all.
Took the plunge and bought a brand new JCA 50H. I know people say its best to have a set of valves as a back up so ive been looking up and reading about what to buy for it.

Seems like a set of JJ tubes are the ones everyone says to get.
So just buy a matched pair of 6L6GC and 5 12AX7's then?

Or does anyone have any other options on the matter?

Also does anyone have any links to mods for the amp?

Thanks all.

My advice about tubes is going to your local electronics shop (not guitars or anything, just electronic components) and see if they have any nice tubes.
NOS JAN Philipps 12AX7 are hella nice you know, and tubes/guitar tubes stores sell them for $15 or more.
Electronic components shops on the other hand...

And though I never tried, they say 12AU7s sound nice when used as PI.

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

I had a JCA100H and really liked a JAN 5751 in V1 (closest tube to the guitar input). It tamed the hair of the amp and made it sound a little more refined

Looking at trying to keep it under £100 for the full set of tubes. Ive just heard the stock chinese ones could do with being replaces asap since they aren't the best.

Was thinking getting something fancy in V1 and a 12AU7 in the PI.

Might go back to some more reading up on them.

Cheers for the suggestions so far guys

Yeah I'd get 4 JJ ECC83's and a matched pair of JJ 6L6GC's (or whatever the code is). Then get a handful of others to play with. JJ ECC803, Mullard 12AX7 RI, JJ 5751, Tungsol 12AX7 RI JJ 12AT7.

Just roll them around and see what you like. Worst case scenario you have a good amount of spare preamp tubes. And there is nothing "worst" about that scenario.

I'll agree with the rest here. Just re-tubed my 2212c with JJ power tubes and 4 JJ ECC83's and a Jan Phillips NOS 12AT7 in V1 and it made it a whole new amp. I also have a JJ 5751 and 12AT7 to switch around and test when I can. (and an RCA NOS 12AT7 I can test but it's for another amp)

If you want something fancy for V1, go for a British Mullard ECC83 or an Amperex/Bugle Boy ECC83. I prefer the Amperexes tbh but a real Mullard would be good too (and they're cheaper).
