I think they should put them on as bonus tracks. Maybe do one of the special editions, charge $1-2 more and include a couple covers/demos with it. Now if this is a band's first album then by all means throw a cover onto the regular album, but if it's an established band who are on their 4th or 5th album then it shouldn't be on the regular tracklist.

On the first two albums sure. Getting a first album out can be a little tough sometimes if you don't have enough material to make a full LP.

If a band has established themselves, having covers as bonus songs on deluxe versions is more professional looking. And I don't mind at all if a band makes a full album of covers as long as it doesn't interfere with their album cycle.

To me, covers on albums is paying homage to bands who have influenced the band. I appreciate bands who pay their respects to their music heroes.

Depends on how good the cover and what kind of cover it is.

If you do a cover and make it your own like Melvins did with Sacrifice, then go right ahead.
#5
Melvins also covered Ballad of Dwight Frye (Alice Cooper) and Going Blind (Kiss). Both were on studio albums and were well done.

Im ok with covers as long as they are tasteful, such as Slayer doing that Priest song on South of Heaven.

Nah it wasn't a good cover.

Angelcorpse did a good cover of Pleasure to Kill and Vader nailed Raining Blood

Akercocke did that cover of Chapel of Ghouls. While it was more bland than the original, or at least I saw it that way, they absolutely nailed the bit around 1:50. They did a decent job on the solos too.

I really liked that Angelcorpse cover, but Slayer were covered by Disaffected and it wasn't half shit.

I don't have the Carnivore tribute album at my place, but Crucifier and Arghoslent did covers of World Wars III & IV and Race War respectively. I'll upload the entire thing one day but I don't have it with me.

I don't remember the Arghoslent cover but the Crucifier is played well but the quality is trash.

Yeah I just mentioned Sacrifice cus it's my favorite. But those songs were almost half the album but it didn't even matter to me. As long as the covers are great I don't give a shit

Only original material?

What's wrong with one or two covers on an album? A lot of times covers sound better than the original. (Other times, not so much...but whatever.)

Obviously, if it's a whole album full of covers, the band'd better let us know. But that's different.

I much prefer Akercocke's cover of Leprosy. It was much tighter than Chapel. Monstrosity had the so so cover of Angel of Death at the end of In Dark Purity. It would of been really good but Jason's vocal performance was eh.

Mendonca's grunts really serve Leprosy well. I find the production is almost too clean, but it's brutish enough that it doesn't make me hate it. Still prefer the original though.

Back to Helmkamp though,

Blood of Kingu also did a cover of my favourite Beherit track,

Still prefer the original. Sorry, posted wrong link. In a hurry.

A few super obvious ones I missed,

Blind Guardian - Don't Break the Circle/Barbara Ann/Surfin' U.S.A./Mr. Sandman
Judas Priest - Better By You Than By Me/ Diamonds and Rust
Dissection - Elizabeth Bathory

Yeah, and Jacob's band (The Wildchild) starring Progbass (progbass) also did a cover of Black Metal by Venom:

The best cover (possibly)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDUWoi-Ir-0

I generally don't see the point of like-for-like covers. Why wouldn't you listen to the orignal. By all means if it's being significantly reworked and arranged, kind of like variations or a fantasia on a theme as you get in classical music, then I'm ok with it. Though I kind fo liek albums to be albums, and feel composed as such. And it's very hard to cover a song, but have it fit in with the flow of your album and not stand out.

That said, Trespassers William did a great job covering Ride's Vapour Trails, I didn't even know it was a cover such was the consistency with the rest of the album.

Similarly with Slowdive's cover of Syd Barrett's Golden Hair

I already heard it because you posted it on facebook to Jacobo instead of messaging him the finished product so I'm going to craft bootlegs and sell them for $$$

You guys definitely nailed the Godflesh sound though.
