I'm an indie guitarist and I'm after a new guitar to take over from my 'jack of all trades' Yamaha Pacifica which I modded with a ToneZone a few months ago. I went to the shop to try out a load of different axes but I'm still stuck on which one to get so I'm yet to buy one. I'm not gonna lie, I want a guitar that says Fender on the headstock- shallow, I know but I've always liked Fender and tbh I might not be happy with a new guitar unless it's a Fender. Call me what you will but that's the truth.

I have some concerns about what I need the guitar to do though and this is where I need the advice.

Ideally, I want a Fender Jaguar but I can't afford one- my budget is only around 500 pounds unfortunately. I'll therefore probably end up with a Mexican Telecaster but I'm very concerned about it sounding really thin when distorted and not being able to get a good lead sound out of it. I'm sure it will be great for rhythm but I'm definitely worried about how good it'll be when it's got a Big Muff behind it.

Is this a legitimate concern? Any pedals in particular which would thicken the tone?

I also tried the MP series Jg and Tele Thinline but they are Chinese and that implies that they'll be cheaply made and I'll quickly grow out of them. I want the guitar to last me for a few years at the least until I get GAS bad enough to buy something new.

To summarise:

- Step above beginner guitar

- Fender

- Have the ability to thicken the sound if I want to

- Under £500 or so pounds

- Look great aesthetically

-Will last me for gigs and rehearsals.

I have a Laney VC30 and various pedals but my main dirt pedals are a Big Muff and a DS-2.

I want to get an Arctic Monkeys, The Smiths, Black Keys and post-punk sound (think New Model Army,Echo but that might be pushing it too much.)

Thanks.

Fender Classic Player Jaguars go on ebay for under $500 all the time. Alternatively, the Blacktop Jazzmaster gets you the offset look for a good price. Otherwise look for a used 72' Deluxe Tele if you want the indie look.

As far as brand new stuff; nothing wrong with a good ol' standard Tele.

Something that I forgot to mention- I usually buy 2nd hand everytime but I want something new this time really so that I can make my own dents in it over time and everything if you know what I mean. Also, the USA has much better prices on 2nd hand stuff and more of it

Have you looked at G&L Tribute guitars? Those are about $500 USD brand new, which is under your budget by a bit.

Yeah, I did know that about Leo but I dunno, just doesn't seem right to me for my main guitar. Thanks, I'm 90% on the Tele.

if you want a fender, get a fender, it's your money and your call

the thin thing definitely is a concern. there are a number of things you can do, but whether they'll actually replace a humbucker is another thing. but if you want the tele tone, putting a humbucker in there is going to kill that, so it's kind of a balancing act.

a tubescreamer-style od pedal (used as a boost, drive/gain on zero and level on 10... only use those settings with a dirty amp or you'll kill your ears ) will normally help. won't turn it into a humbucker but will help a bit. i think we recommended a bunch of them in your last thread, all under £50.

I suppose an EQ pedal could be used in a similar way to fatten things up and maybe give a little boost to match humbucker output levels.

you could also mod the tele to have a 4-way switch. the 4th position wires the two single coils in series to give a pseudo-humbucker type of tone. if you want to hear how that sounds, try a USA deluxe Fender Tele, if you select the S1 switch the middle position is the single coils wired in series. Again, doesn't sound exactly like a regular humbucker but it should help.

the advantage of both of those fixes (rather than getting a humbucker tele) is that your guitar will still sound like a regular tele if you want it to. But neither of those fixes will make it sound exactly like a humbucker, either. It's a judgement call, unfortunately. I'm super-indecisive too so I know what you're going through.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

I would save up for the fender jaguar, it sounds like you won't be happy until you get it. If your not happy with the guitar you get you end up buying another sooner then you should.

Can you get MIM Strats for 500 pounds over there? If so, and given your limitations, I might be looking for an HSS version, and perhaps use on EQ/booster pedal like the Seymour Duncan Booster with it it. Another Fender I really liked was the Chinese ones, the Modern Player series. - Especially the thinline deluxe tele version with P90s, a good versatile sound, but that one might not be the best for what you want to play:

That price also looks reasonable.

I mentioned that I played that MP Tele and I did really like it but hollow bodies seem too specialist for my main axe- they are next on my list mind. And I'm not a fan of strats, got a Squier and that's enough.

I like the light weight of the MP Thinline in addition to the pickups, but there are plenty of other non-strat choices in the MP range that you might prefer.

Agreed.

I can think of a few UK/USA/Canadian non-Fender guitars that might fit the bill- JustRooster knows what I'm talkin' 'bout- but as the saying goes, "The heart wants what the heart wants." The OP wants a Fender- it's highly likely nothing else will satisfy.

So, OP, save up your £££ until you can afford the Fender.

have you tried a thin line hollow? i think they are pretty damn nice IMO.

your putting a lot of restrictions on options, but you want to get what you want to get. nothing wrong with that, but it does limit options more.

i would get a nashville tele (i have one) and they are really nice to have around, still get some more stratty tones with them (being it is a strat pickup in the middle), but still pretty pure tele.

The thinline was the Modern Player Tele that I tried.

If I'm gonna get a Jag then I'll wait and get the classic player one- no point in spending almost as much to get something not as good.

yeah that'd be my concern, too. I haven't tried the modern players but I think they have that rep- they're made in china, aren't they?

They're made in the same factory as the Classic Vibe / Vintage Modified guitars. Expect the same quality. Some can be gems, some can be horrid.

You have the exact same music taste as me, a used fender Baja tele is your best bet as it has 6 different pickup selector positions so a wide variety of tones. Sounds great for both lead and rhythm
