Hey folks,

I'm trying to find a head (used if necessary) for under a $1000 bucks. I'm assuming it has to be pretty versatile in order to play the varying types of rock I like. Bands I like:
Bad Religion, BANE, Quicksand, Banner Pilot, Jawbreaker, Bob Mould / Sugar / Husker Du.

Your input would be highly appreciated.

I was gonna say a JCM900
Charvel So-Cal (SH6TB/N, killswitch), Jackson RR5FR (TB6/Jazz, Drop C). Joyo pxl pro.
Loop1=Crybaby from hell, Boss PS-5, Seymour Duncan 805 or Green Rhino, EQD Hoof or Earthbound Audio Super Collider. Loop 1 into ISP Decimator II.
Loop 2 (FX loop)-Line6 M9, TC Spark Mini. Loop 2 into mxr 10band. All into a Peavey Triple XXX 212, Ibanez IL15.

I think you'd be looking for a Marshall sound. The Dual Recs might have too much bottom end, but I don't have mich experience with either...
Caution:
This post may contain my opinion and/or inaccurate information.

Current Rig:
2006 PRS CE-24
Mesa/Boogie Mark V
Voltage S212 w/ V30's
Strymon Timeline
CMATMods Signa Drive

If you check GC's used section, you might come across a few within the 1k range.

JCM 800 2203/2204 would be perfect for you.
I play one and I can totally nail Bad Religion and Jawbreaker tones (One of BR's guitarists used one when I saw them last year, I think it was Brian).

You can easily find one used for under $1000 and then you can afford a 2x12 cab with nice speakers aswell.

What about a Bugera trirec ? (ducks bricks being thrown at him).

good thing you ducked. i had a brick in one hand...

i have a trem-o-verb, IIRC $750ish, it is a Dual Rec just with a tad more favorable voicing for some things. you can find a dual rec under a grand without much trouble.

or i would also add a peavey JSX to the recommendation list. it has a wider scope of tone. but i prefer the mesa over the peavey, but that is personal preference. your ideas may vary.

if you like them, Orange.

i would be looking hard at mesa (i would jump on a mini rectifier) or an EVH III (i would jump on the mini 50 watt).

Ok. So the Trirec is out then. Thoughts on the Jet City JCA100HDM? I appreciate the input so far folks.

Update: I decided to purchase the Jet city JCA100HDM. I figure for $499.00 brand new it'll be pretty hard to beat. Now for the cabinet.......

Would like to warn you about JCA's quality control. 2 heads of theirs came to me and both had their power tubes die in a month or two

Yeah....that's pretty much the exact opposite of what I wanted to hear (And one of the main reasons I steered clear of the trirec). Did you deal with the retailer, or Jet City directly when this happened?

Both of mine were from a retailer

It really is a bummer, I think they're really good sounding amps for the price.

This has got me pretty frightened..primarily since I bought it off of ebay (authorized retailer though). Also, as mentioned above, I don't have a cab yet to test it on.

+1 its not worth worrying about. and that was right near the beginning of their production, maybe it was an issue then, but its several years later and i haven't seen a mass of DOA JCA's.

When it comes to quality control, MY JCA 100 blew an OT, but I had someone fix that in for a good price. It now has a 5150 OT. The JCA is really thick, which is why I used it over my DSL. As someone mentioned, The Mesa's have a lot of bottom end. I actually moved from the DSL, to the JCA, to an older Triple Rec FOR that reason. I liked how thick it was, and it sat very well in the mix. I also play in a band where the lead singer plays guitar, but he is often off it. The thick Mesa DEFINITELY helps beef things up.

While the Quality control on the JCA may be a little "Eh", man do they slay.

Excuse my ignorance..bu what do you mean by "OT"? Is that a transformer, or a tube? I'm assuming a transformer.
#25
OT = output transformer. The thing between the power tubes and the speakers.
