Couple things.

1. what's your budget, are you willing to buy used stuff, where do you live, what do you play, who do you wanna sound like... ?

2. my 5w amp turned all the way up with a lower than stock pre gain is still ****in' loud.

Power ratings in guitar amps are made up, and they don't mean shit about the volume the amp will produce because that depends on lotsa other factors as well, such as the speakers.

That means an amp rated at 100w may well be less loud than an amp rated at 30w.
Ever tried an AC30?

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

If you don't need effects, I'd say VK212
Charvel So-Cal (SH6TB/N, killswitch), Jackson RR5FR (TB6/Jazz, Drop C). Joyo pxl pro.
Loop1=Crybaby from hell, Boss PS-5, Seymour Duncan 805 or Green Rhino, EQD Hoof or Earthbound Audio Super Collider. Loop 1 into ISP Decimator II.
Loop 2 (FX loop)-Line6 M9, TC Spark Mini. Loop 2 into mxr 10band. All into a Peavey Triple XXX 212, Ibanez IL15.

I'm with the vypyr tube idea, though I'd look at the vox valvetronix too.

Not a valvetronix worst purchase of my life

I had one for a while, it's a great little practice amp

More dedicated to blues/classic rock though, so as TS wants to get Metallica as well it probably isn't the best option here, but it does what it does very well.

That said, +1 to the Vypyr suggestion.

Yeah, I think the Valvetronix sounds pretty good. At first I hated them but now I have learned to like the sound. Maybe I learned to use it, I don't know. But yeah, I would say it's not the best amp for heavier sounds.

Does your amp have an fx loop? Do you have to play through headphones a lot?
