So I recently ditched the old Spider Valve 212 (which I loved, but now it's going to a good home with a kid learning to play from his dad, oh the feels) and bought this used VH100R from GC at the steal price of $450. The only reason it was listed so low is the tubes are cheap Chinese ones and one of the LEDs on the face is missing (which I can do myself).

The cab is a Crate Palomino 2x12 combo amp converted to a 2x12 cab. Wound up trading the Spider Valve for this. Upgraded with Eminence V128 speakers. Which are, from what I've read and just heard in person, high wattage V30s.

All in all this amp is amazing. Very JCM800-ish tones with a bit more punch in the mids and highs. Perfect for my proggy/stoner taste. If you're thinking of picking one up, definitely jump on it. Cleans ore nice and very useable as well. Not super Fendery but the are nice and get the job done for Scale the Summit tapping licks.

Still dialing it in at the moment (it's 10:30 PM here, I'll get on a decent tone and a video tomorrow), but I'm loving it. 4 Cable method with the POD HD500 for effects only now.

Dope. Laneys are cool amps, in both look and sound. HNA/CD!

I have a 4x12 with V12's and they work really nice with my DSL, so they should work nice with the Laney since they are voiced similar

I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

Thanks guys! So that vid ain't coming. The only thing I can use is my iPod and it sounds like crap. One issue I am having (though it isn't major.... hopefully) is that there's an audible click every few minutes. I tapped all the tubes and none of them sound microphonic and none of them are blown. It's also hissing a bit. I am also already planning on putting in those JJs in the next two weeks. Should I be able to just put some JJ 12AX7s and EL34s in there and call it a day?

EL34L in that. JJ ECC803 in V1. JJ ECC83S everywhere else. The clicking could very well be a tube. I have had tubes do that. It's certainly worth trying. The other possibility is a leaky capacitor and that will be a LOT harder to find and fix.

I'm picking up some barely used JJ ECC83s from my local gear exchange. Where can I get the rest of those tubes cheap?

Tube Depot are usually pretty good. A lot of people here swear by Doug's Tubes too. If you want to go NOS, check out TC Tubes.

Yeah I was shopping around and Tube Depot is the cheapest. I was going to go through Valvequeen but it would have been $90 for the 5 tubes. On Tube Depot its like $65.

Oh, and by the way. They're called E34L, not EL34L. I always make that mistake. That's all I'd put in that amp - JJ E34L. Kickarse tubes.

Yeah I got those ones.

2 more dumb questions.

1) Do I need to keep those metal sleeves on the preamp tubes or can I take them off?

2) How do I identify each tube, 1-10?

1. Leave them on, they provide electrostatic shielding.

2. Doesn't the manual say which is which? I thought it did. Usually they count from the closest to the input jack across.

JJ E34L are great power tubes. Had a set in a Carvin V3 and Peavey 3120. Sounded great in both in a bunch of different styles of music. I have used Tube Depot for quite some time now, always a great experience. Cheap prices, their JJs are cheaper than Eurotubes which only sells JJs, or was last I checked which I find funny. I usually get the tubes in two days from when I post my order and they arrive very well packaged.
