So the first albums we're recorded in standard tuning, and Masters of Reality and forward were usually downtuned a minor third.

However, many times songs from all these albums are played live at the same show. Which tuning does he use then usually? Do they perhaps switch the guitar and maybe even the bass to get different tunings in one concert?

As there are many open string licks involved, I guess he wouldn't play in the album pitch on a downtuned guitar by transposing.

I believe, although I'm not sure about this, he mainly plays in C# standard these days.

I don't know that for sure though and really you need to be aware that big bands, or even really just pretty competent bands, switch out guitars during sets a lot. I do it a lot with the band I'm in since there's about 3 different tunings on the album and over a longer career those tunings can really mount up.

Watch some of premier guitar's rig run-throughs, you'll see how it can really mount up quickly. Bands like Deftones, Metallica and many others have upwards of 10 guitars with them on any given tour since they need two for each tuning: one main and one back up.

I know "Iron Man" is basically standard tuning though a bit sharp. I guess it was common back then to have less than concert pitch on records.

I looked at an Iron Man live video from this year, and that was in D tuning. I would assume he plays the rest of the songs in that and C#
