Hi guys,

I have been listening to the new Fallujah album, it is great technical death metal.

Thing is my wife cannot stand the singing.

It got me thinking... why is it that all this beautiful music has constant themes of death and morbidity. Not saying there is anything wrong with that... but are there any bands out there playing the musical side of things the same, but not with those typical themes?

Power Metal comes to mind. I mean it kinda has the same themes but it's overall a more positive vibe. I'm not super into Power Metal though so I am just talking like Blind Guardian and shit

Try showing your wife some instrumental metal. Give her a chance to appreciate the musicality, without putting up a mental wall because of the vocal style and/or lyrical themes.

My suggestion? Conquering Dystopia. I've already used that album to get a few people into metal who would never give it a chance before because of growling and/or screaming vocals.

Is it the singing or the lyrical themes that you or your wife dislike? There is plenty of metal without screaming—I've never listened to Fallujah, but I assume you're referring to the growls/screams because that is what everyone complains about when it comes to metal.

One, if your wife cannot stand the singing, then get out of the *******. She's an empowered woman and can do what she pleases.

Two, if you want bands without the death metal vocals, go to the recommendation thread. Look at the following sections:Heavy metal,NWOBHM, Speed/Thrash (kind of because a lot of these bands influenced death metal with their snarling vocals), Sludge/Stoner, Folk metal (some bands don't use screams as much; ask in the thread for more specific recs), POWER metal, Progressive metal, DOOM metal.

Three, if you want bands without the morbid lyrical themes, then look more towards Power, heavy, folk, and prog metal. If the morbidity of the lyrics bothers you, then you have no business listening to most death or black metal, some doom metal and its variants, or some speed/thrash metal.

Four, I'll be nice and give you a few links. For future reference, these types of requests go in the recommendation thread at the top of the page.

There are screams here, but there is nothing morbid about Cynic's lyrics. They're actually quite beautiful. 1993's Focus is a death metal classic.

You're welcome.

Get over the screaming. The lyrics are fantastic.
