How straight should my picking hand's thumb be? Currently, I bend it all the way in, at a 90 degree angle, where it makes contact with the first knuckle of my pointer finger. i've read that it's more optimal to have the thumb almost completely straight.

I'm currently at a plateau with my picking, and playing in general and I'm looking to attack the issue at all angles. Thanks.

It's more of a choice, angling your thumb more will necessarily angle the pick, getting you more of that scratchy Paul Gilbert tone. Frankly no matter what angle you choose, as long as your hand is as relaxed as possible it doesn't really matter.

Indeed, it doesn´t really matter. It is more of a choice what feels the best and sound the best to you.
