So it's been rumored for a month or so that Studio Ghibli was going to close down. Well, it's pretty much official now. Studio Ghibli is closing its animation department and no further films will be made.

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=121379

In case you aren't familiar with Studio Ghibli, here's a list of some of their more famous films:

Castle in the Sky
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Cat Returns
Howl's Moving Castle
Ponyo

I'm super bummed about this. Studio Ghibli played a huge role in my childhood. I've loved and watched their films for like 20 years.

Yeah, in a way I'm glad they're closing now and not pulling a Metallica on it.

My parents rented Spirited Away when I was about seven or eight because they figured the movie that won "Best animated feature" would be a great family movie. Still like that one, want to see more of them. Shame the studio's closing down.

less anime is never a bad thing

Normally I would agree, but you have to realize that Ghibli films are totally different. They are more realistic in movement and physics, the animation isn't cringey, and they doesn't have all the ridiculous tropes and cliches that make most anime so insufferable.

I mean, look at this. It's all you need to know.

The end of a generation in cinematography really.
People just be like hurrhurr less anime durrr, but it's akin to a visionary director passing away like Kubric, Welles or god forbid Coppola.
One less niche to be filled with good artistic development, and instead flooded with the crap that it was holding back.

It was a different type of anime though. I mean look at this

People who are going "yay less anime" have literally never seen a ghibli film. Or probably any decent anime for that matter.
