Hi,

I'm looking for any reccommendations for smallish (max 50 watt) tube amp head suitable for all kinds of kranked metal. It can be a one trick pony and I'm not really too bothered about a clean channel, dirt only! Some I'm looking at are :

Mesa Boogie Mini Rec
Marshall DSL 15/40 Heads
Randall rd45h

Also, what would be the best (tone wise) 2x12 or at a push 4x12 cabs to go with it!?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

There's no reason to limit your wattage for a hi-gain amp. You do NOT want power amp distortion for modern metal. Higher wattage means more headroom and that's what you need.

Also what's your budget?

Dirt only?

Any Peavey 5150/6505 variant and boost it with your favorite OD. Sounds perfect for what you want.

Cab: Closed-back. V30s, Governors, also hear the Swamp Thang/Texas Heat speaker combo is popular for metal. Would like to try it myself.

There's also another speaker people like to mix with Vintage 30s, but I can't remember the name of it.

For 1000GBP look at the 50 watt EVH 5150III mini head

The older Krank Rev Jr pro are decent, but harder to find across the pond.

The new Marshall DSL 15 is crap, the 40 is only a combo not a head.

^ I concur.
Also the speaker people like to mix v30's with is the T75 AFAIK.
I did that and went back to the v30 pair though, so I guess it's not for everybody

Just to be sure though, would you give us examples of the sounds you wanna achieve?
Name's Luca.

It may not be filthy enough. Great amp, but it's a little more tame compared to its older brothers.

Clearly you need a Krank, then. Why are those other amps even on your list!?

Baron Snott watt would work and be under budget, any Stiff amplification or Krank Jr series (same builder) the new Revolution amps are really nice and are var8iations on the Krank designes.

Filthiest / Heaviest Valve / Tube Amp Head?

Friend of mine has one that had a bit of a problem with a mudslide in one of the canyons. Still has most of the mud inside, quite heavy. Will sell cheap.

You can call me Ronnie. Using my name in a "God dammit, Ronnie" context might be way more satisfying for you. It sounds like the name of guy that would screw up and piss people off.

I just really like amps.

They're great amps. Underrated because of a stupid marketing ploy they did when they first came out that turned many off to them. A shame, because Tony Krank made some great circuits. I hope his new company does well, but it doesn't really seem like he's trying to make it big like Krank was... at least he updated the website, it's not quite as terrible now

Yeah, I think he wants to make a decent living off amps, not a fortune like before.

My only issues with his other company's is they are not visually appealing to me. The stuff's looked really bad, the Revolution line looks better, but that metal grill is ugly

What marketing ploy? Having Dime?

Those amps were terrible fuzzboxes, I tried the whole Krank range once upon a time and everything was like an overloaded XXX channel...which I guess some people might consider the brootz...

Anyhow, to me a well designed brutal hate machine or whatever will be the VHT/Fryette Sig X

No they paid people to post good reviews on several web forums.

I'm not a fan of the original K-stein it was a fizzy/fuzzy amp, but the Rev, Chadwick and the 1980 are very nice amps and they are cheap used and they (Chadwick,1980) have very good clean channels

The Sig:X can indeed be very brutal, just like the Deliverance; but, it is more versatile. The Clean is very nice and the range of the Mids is very wide and can be tweaked to taste. Prepare to be intimidated by all the knobs and switches.

Get it!

They come really nicely priced once in a while. The 1st one I got was $1200 used, a few months after it came out but sold it immediately to a friend who really loved it. I've had my 2nd one for a bit over 3 years now from a guy who was being low-balled by GC. Pure luck!

I've also had the Ultra Lead (KT88) and the CLX (EL34) and both slay it, an opinion; however, the Sig:X covers a bit more ground.
