So I've been trying to record some bass today and I'm not getting anywhere with it. I've gone Bass into a VTBASSDI and into my Focusrite 2i4. No levels, no sound. Absolutely nothing.

Help?

How are you connecting everything?
Does the sansamp work if connected to something else?
Doesn't anything light up on the scarlett if when you play stuff?
Does anything light up on the scarlett if you connect the bass directly to that?

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

Bass> Sansamp> Focusrite

Nothing lights up on the Scarlet, but I just recorded some guitars through it so I know it works.

Haven't tested the sansamp with anything else. But I am using an active bass if that helps

Tried to connect bass. Still nothing?

You need to start trying different combinations to isolate the problem link in the chain.

That said, if there are no lights on your scarlett, that sounds suspect to me. Then again, I don't have one, so maybe it's not supposed to light up? I dunno.

Turn everything off then back on again, then start swapping things in and out until you find out what's wrong.

Well the problem's with the scarlett then.

How do you have the input gain levels on the scarlett?
Are they set on instrument or line?
Is the interface connected to a powered up computer?
Does any recording program you have installed show any signs of receiving an input, both when you have the bass connected directly and when you pass through the sansamp?

Did you click the little speaker button on the track so that you can monitor the sound?

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.
