What is the best guitar for around $500 - 900. I will be using it for Hard Rock and Metal.

The LTD MH1000, a superstrat, (or EC1000, LPN shape) is probably the best LTD in that range new or used. Its a boss guitar and will fit that style of music very well. But as always, try before you buy. I recommend you play everything in that price range first and then get what you like the best,

I own the ESP LTD EC1000 and it weighs like 10lbs, the hardware is nice, the hardware is similar to what you would expect on a Fender Stratocaster Special or above. I've talked to other ESP owners who have owned other models than the EC1000 and all of them are very happy.

UPDATE:

I've noticed that my EC1000 does go out of tune faster than my Stratocaster tho. Not too noticeable, I think the strings just needed to stretch out a bit, but I do have to make sure I'm tuned up correctly before every jam. Love the tone I get out of it, exactly the sound I'm looking for. I've had mine for about a week and a half now, I'd rate it a 4/5. It would be a 5/5 if it held in tune better. (Other guitars I've had like my Martin & my old Stratocaster, you could jam on them for 4 hours and they wouldn't fall out of tune. After playing my EC1000 after like 30 minutes to an hour it starts to lose tune.)
Some see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty. Me? I see that the glass is refillable.

EC-1000's! Great Les Paul style guitar at a fraction the cost, and arguably better construction.

As far as modern LTDs are concerned, anything 1000 or 600 are equal and good quality. Find one with the specs you want.

Older LTDs are trickier. 300s are great (crap HZs stock though), 400s are great. Either old 300 or 400 is likely to be a better quality guitar than a new 1000 or 600. But you have to be familiar with the brand history/products and know what you're looking for.

I've owned a plethora of LTDs: an H-301, an M-200, a V-50, an MH-401NT, an EC-1000 (in that order). I get bored and unsatisfied with my gear VERY quickly. The H-301 is the only one that has stood the test of time, and it has stood head and shoulders above the rest, and I have no intention of ever getting rid of it. As a couple people around here know, that is saying a LOT coming from me.

Until you're more familiar with LTDs eras and factory changes and all that really stupid nerdy stuff, just be on the lookout for anything made in Korea. That's the most relatively safe bet you have to go off. Though some can be disappointing. (My EC-1000, an '08 or '09, IIRC, was disappointing. My H-301 is an '06.)
