Hi guys,

I don't know if this is where I should be posting this, but anyway. Does anybody know any good instructional guitar DVDs, especially the more advanced ones such as George Benson's The Art of Jazz Guitar? It doesn't need to be that advanced, anything done by famous/very skilled players such as Zakk Wylde's Pentatonic Hardcore would be great. I am more concerned with learning from their playing than from the words they say.

Thanks a lot!

If you're just concerned with learning from playing rather than instructional material then just work on transcribing songs. There's no point spending money on essentially arbitrary DVDs when any guitarist worth their salt has enough material out there to learn from already if that's what you're looking for.

If you're talking about video footage of playing then youtube has more than you could ever possibly want or probably even watch.

Thank you very much for your answer!

Yes, both DVDs I cited can be found on youtube. I do transcribe songs already!

I just find this type of material very didactic. They often times play the same things in two different tempos, and they also give helpful tips and comments, so I'd really appreciate if anyone knows of anything along these lines.

Fair enough, there are a metric tonne of them out there, generally produced by companies who specialise in them, so the companies you want to look at are:

REH: 80s, lots of shred, wild variance in quality
LickLibrary: tonnes of material, lots of variety, very little of it done by the original players but good anyway
Fret12: limited roster, I don't have any experience with them but the production values are good
Metal method: Another old company, most famous for putting out Speed Kills and have continued the same way ever since
Young guitar: Actually a Japanese magazine but the DVDs they have with the magazine are legendary. These might be hard to get hold of if you're looking for physical copies, I haven't looked in to it so I don't know, but there's a tonne on youtube.

I can't think of any others off the top of my head but there's more than enough there to keep you busy!
