Hi everyone!

I need to buy some cable to wire up some XLR's for a pedal board. I would like to know if it is recommended to use a cables 'shield' as a wire, or should you use 3 wires inside a cable and leave the shield alone?

For clarity, here are the two cables:

2 wires + shield:

3 wires + shield:

Appreciate your opinions!

Thank you..

Hi Lenny,

Yes, I have been told that the '3rd' wire when wiring an XLR is the shield. If this is the case, why do they make cables with 3 wires + shield?

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to reply. Hope someone else can 'chime in' with a definitive answer.

All the best,
