Just picked up the 2x12 combo xxx for 250 USD
in mint condition as it was a studio amp from
the get go. Anyway this is going to be my main
backup for the rectoverb and RM. Problem is
the speakers seem to really enhance the all
ready massive brightness of the amp. I am
mainly a metal player think LOG,Down,KSE for
basic tones. Wanting to do a speaker swap as
I've all ready upgraded tubes and such and still
feel the brightness is to present. Thanks in advance.

Combo doesn't have a presence knob wish it did
but its still a killer amp. I'm thinking of doing a combo
of sorts like swamp thang and? If that helps any. Xxx
speakers are rumored to be voiced like V30's I believe.

Swamp Thang and Texas heat mix very well.
have you thought about WGS?

If metal is your main style the Celestion G12T75 and the V30 work well and you get a good bass and nice mids/highs. WGS has clones of these for <$75 each and free shipping from MF.

The CL80 and a V30 (or clones) are another option if you want a little less aggressive sound

yes no presence sucks

I love V30's, but for what you're doing, you may also want to look at Eminence Delta ProA's. My favorite open-back amp has V30's. My closed-back 2x12s have the ProA's, but the cabinets are also ported specifically to tune the bottom end to around 52Hz (can't really do that with the V30's -- I've tried it).

do you want to keep the sort of british tone? TH + ST as rob rightly said should darken it up a fair bit, but will also make it sound kind of american, which might not be what you want.

That is a great price for a great amp. I can't help you with the speakers though. I'm pretty happy with the tone I get out of my XXX when I have the right guitar plugged in.

I don't mind if it leans towards american tone as the 6l6's all

I run Swamp Thangs/Governors crossed in a 412 and it sounds crushing.

Governors are a bit more tame on the high-end than V30s but are very similar. Lots and lots of grind but still have decent low end.

Swamps have a huge, thick low end and are loud as hell. Surprisingly, they have decent mids and highs as well. I think one of those in your combo would help a great deal. You might want to keep your other speaker though, because you don't want to cut out too much in the upper mids (Swamps are slightly lacking in upper mids).

How many watts is it?

A pair of G12H30s if it's 60W or less. If it's more, get WGS Reaper HPs.

They'll tame that brightness right quick.

yeah agreed on the bass thing. they're a fair bit more vintage-sounding than a v30 (and also an unbroken-in v30 can sound kind of harsh), but they have that top-end bite that the v30 doesn't really have. a v30's almost like a tubescreamer in speaker form

Yes, even with the 4/8/16 switch if you connect the 2 16ohm speakers the same as the 2x 8 ohm speakers you will end up with 32ohm which your amp won't like.

CABINET WIRING - TWO SPEAKERS

There are exactly two ways to connect two speakers together. One is "series" wiring and the other is "parallel".

Series wiring results in double the impedance of one speaker. Parallel wiring results in half the impedance of one speaker. This schematic shows how to wire two 8-ohm speakers into either a 16-ohm or a 4-ohm cab.

To make an 8-ohm cab, use two 4-ohm speakers in series, or two 16-ohm speakers in parallel.
