My band is in the market for a new bass amp, since we're probably going to be bringing a drummer back into the mix, and the little Fender Rumble 75 we've been using just won't cut it.

I work at a small local guitar shop, and we carry GK bass amps, and I'm pretty set on getting one. Thing is, we only have a couple small ones in stock, so I'll need to order one, and I'm confused as hell about the wattage/ohm ratings between their heads and cabs.

I'm looking at the MB500 head, which is 500w @4ohms. I want a Neo 212 cab, but they're made for 600w @8ohms. If I understand it correctly, running a 4ohm amp into an 8ohm cab will cut down half the power of the amp, right?

Then there's the CX series cabs, which GK's own site says are "the perfect compliment to the MB series heads", and yet, none of the CX cabs match the wattage and ohm ratings of any of the MB heads. So... what the hell is the deal?

So basically, what's the deal with matching heads and cabs for their wattage and ohms? How close do they actually have to match? Can I get a cab that will run all 500 watts of a 4 ohm amp, without being overkill like one of GK's giant 800 watt cabs? Should I just get a combo?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If it's 500W into 4 ohms, it will be between 250 and 300W into 8 ohms. It will piss it in. That's only a decrease of about 3dB. Not worth concerning yourself over. You're never gonna be running it with the volume maxed out so it really will have no affect on what you hear, none at all.

Hmm. Mmk, that makes sense. I'll probably go with the Neo 212 cab with the Mb500 head then. So, one more question: if I get that setup and then maybe later on get another of the same cab, daisy chaining them would drop the ohm rating, and let the amp run the full 500 watts, split between the two cabs, right? Or am I misunderstanding how that works?

get a 400RB-IV and what ever cab you want. It is a very nice head and miles above the MB.

And the MarkiBass Little Mark Tube 800 (or 500 for that matter) slaughters them both.
