One does not encounter that bass very often. It is known as the Steinberger Spirit XT-25; a licensed copy of the famous Steinberger headless bass with the minimalist body. Unlike the original Steinberger, the Spirit XT-25 has a neck and body made of maple, rather than of phenolic resin. The overall quality is decent.

It is difficult to recommend this sort of bass if you plan to give it as a gift to someone else. There is nothing wrong with it, but these headless basses are a different breed from the usual basses. Most bass players either love these headless basses, or they hate them. There is not much in-between there. But if your son likes headless basses, then he will probably like this one.
