http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/oct/15/lockheed-breakthrough-nuclear-fusion-energy

Lockheed Martin Corp said on Wednesday it had made a technological breakthrough in developing a power source based on nuclear fusion, and the first reactors, small enough to fit on the back of a truck, could be ready for use in a decade.

This is seriously exciting news. If you didn't know, nuclear fusion is the opposite of fission, energy is released by the fusing of two nuclei to create a heavier nuclei, as opposed to splitting them. It theoretically a safe technology with far less harmful waste associated with it than either fission or traditional fossil fuel burning.

If this works it will literally transform the world as we know it.

To put 100MW into context, the total grid demand for the UK is currently 43.6GW.

So all of our electricity demand could be supplied with just 436 of these reactors. Which can apparently fit on the back of a large truck. This is simply the trucks snarled up in bad traffic near Bristol on the M4 and M5.

You could fit a reactor capable of generating enough energy to power about 50,000 homes into the box room of your house. You'd need just two of these to power a city the size of Exeter.

It would be amazing.

Also don't be an idiot and say it will be militarised as a weapon or used as a terrorist bomb.

Yay!

Hopefully there isn't enough greed from big electric companies and their supporters to prevent this from becoming widely available and implemented across the globe.

Lockheed Martin aren't exactly a mom & pop enterprise . As a major supplier of military equipment, they're hardly short of political and lobbyist support themselves. Hopefully, it'll be enough(plus, we can hope, with pressure from the electorate which will help convince politicians supporting this is in their own interest, too) to see development of this through.

After all, cheaper power for domestic and industrial use has been shown to be one of the most powerful forces for improving the quality of life for people and families on low incomes.

It's a fairly slow going process. There is a lot of investment but time is limited as well as people skilled in the field so even with all the money in the world there's sort of a saturation point.

At the moment there seems to be magnetic (tokamak) techniques which involved keeping the plasma contained in a magnetic field (which have been around for a while) and then there is ignition techniques which involved igniting a fuel ball with a super powerful laser. Apparently the second method is a year away from getting a positive energy output, but tokamaks are still less advanced.

The laser one is cool, just because it justifies my opinion that all problems can be solved with more(both in quantity and power) lasers.

Surely you can use your lasers to get out of paying that?

You'd think, but when I threatened to destroy the power plants, they just said "and what good will your lasers do you then? The lasers won;t have power anymore, and the pigs will just arrest you and beat you with rubber hoses, and stick their truncheons where the sun don't shine. So pay up."

And, due to a regrettable lack of foresight, the lasers actually are not sufficiently mobile to be of use in a bank robbery or casino heist, which were really my last 2 options.

If it's true and it does work, then the world's set.

I don't believe for shit they're actually able to create something like that in real life though.

Yeah but the almighty center of the sun (and lotsa other stars) don't fit in the back of a truck like LM proposes to.

Pretty almighty, the center of the sun, anyway.

Come on that's all marketing, maybe in 10 years we'll see an article stating they'll have it ready in 9 more years.

This is the company who gave us the broken F-35 which has been marred by a host of defects, delays, massive cost increases, etc. I wouldn't get my hopes up. They just want that gubberment $$$ and will lie through their teeth to get and provide a garbage product.
