Power output is my weakness, So is a 50 watt head enough to run a 4x12 cab? Or should I get a 100w?

power output doesnt really matter in a guitar cab so long as it doesnt surpass the speaker rating. A 5w could run a 412 just as easily as a 50W or 100W so long as the speakers can handle the juice. A 50W amp is safe to run on just about every 4x12 on the planet.

50 is a good size. I used to run my 100W JCM900 at 50W all the time. ie pulled out two power tubes. And it was driving a 6x12.

That's great! So technically I'd still be able to achieve the same tone that I run now? Which is a "metal" tone, without sacrificing what I have right now. All I run is a 100w Randall 212 combo

Every amp sounds different, more or less. Power is a very small component. What amp are you thinking of buying and what do you play? Also, budget and location.

If it's for gigging, get a PA system.

My 5w amp could drive two 4x12's.
It would also be louder driving two 4x12's compared to the 2x12 I'm using now.

Also the difference between 50w and 100w isn't much y' know.

As cath said, what do you wanna achieve and what gear are you thinking about exactly?

Clue: amplifiers amplify so don't turn it on if you need quiet.

A 50 watt amp will run a 4x12 cab easily, loads of pros have done it for years, and I've played through a few. My Fender Champ, 6 watts, does just fine through a 2x12 Kustom cabinet, it would handle a 4x12 but I've never had one to plug it into. One of the best sounding amps I ever played through was a really old blonde colored 50 watt Marshall through a matching 4x12 cab.

Wattage is not a factor in driving speakers, a one watt amp would probably handle a 4x12 cabinet. What you don't want to do, and it's already been mentioned, is run more wattage than the cabinet can handle.
Hmmm...I wonder what this button does...
