Hey guys,

So I'm in Scotland for a year as a student exchange program (erasmus. I'm from France) doing a Bachelor in business.
And I'm just sick of it.

- My roommate is a hardcore LoL player, he's always shouting and talking loudly with other players through skype (even though I do my best to tell him to keep it down).
- His voice irritiates me and makes me want to punch him.

- It's raining, it's cold, the sky is always grey, people have crazy accents.

- I signed up for tennis at Uni but it's always raining and the courts are outdoors.

- I can't study because I have no desk in my room, and the library is closed.

- I met a couple of people but are rarely available to go out...

I have to endure this hell until end of may.

Play LoL with your roomie and try to give a little bit to the relationship rather than hating on him for enjoying time with friends (albeit online)

It's Scotland - you knew what you were signing up for with the weather. It's always cold and wet.

Once again, it's Scotland. Their accents are difficult for most to understand.

The library will open again. I'm sure you have a bed or another area to sit on in the meantime.

Je comprends que tu te sens mauvaise maintenant mais je pense qu'il faut que tu prends l'opportunité que tu as. Je voudrais beaucoup étudier à l'étranger (en France) mais c'est pas possible pour moi.

Perhaps you could try changing your French nationality to something more desirable like American and then you won't flip shit over stupid things and people may want to spend time with you.

The thing is we have only 9h of classes per week. Per week!!! I'm not used to that. In France it's over 30.
So we just go to class 3h per day and come back home do nothing but smoke weed and play call of duty.

I really want to go out but the few people I've met don't seem to want to make new friends.

punch your roommate
buy warmer clothes
play tennis indoors
build a desk

Request a new roommate. If you can, see if they allow single rooms, because you're going to have to keep guessing if you'll get along well with the next roommate.

- It's raining, it's cold, the sky is always grey, people have crazy accents.

Scottish accents are cool, you're the crazy one.

- I signed up for tennis at Uni but it's always raining and the courts are outdoors.

Isn't this what is generally said about Scotland/the UK?

- I can't study because I have no desk in my room, and the library is closed.

What's stopping you from getting a desk? Did you not think you'd need it? Is there some rule against desks?

- I met a couple of people but are rarely available to go out...

Go meet more people. If university over there is like the US, then that shouldn't be an issue. Here, people talk just to make conversation and make friendships, and it isn't rare for people to introduce themselves to the entire classroom during the first couple of classes.

Yeah the library isn't open on sundays.

There are loads of french people that stay together but if I wanted to hang out with french people I would have stayed home!

I haven't had a real night out yet, tasting all the different beers and getting to know everyone in the pub being blasted.

The problem is, because I have so little hours of class, and because of the majority of french people that don't want to know others, it's hard to make new friends.

I talked to a scottish guy and en english guy last week they seem cool, but they don't seem to want to go out much.

i thought you were making friends at the pub. apart from that, we usually have loads of student getting-to-know-each-other parties at this time of the year, maybe you could find one of those?

why is that ?
I've always been quick at making new friends in a new place, but a huge part of it is getting to talk to people during/after class, or group projects or whatever.

But 90% of the time I'm at home so :/
#36
why do we have introduction parties? because making friends when hammered is easy, specially if the entire party is about getting drunk with new people

I don't know if it's this way for everyone, but I'd say it's easier to make friends outside of class. Inside the classroom is really a place to listen to instructor. Yeah, there's a bit of time to socialise, but you've got work to do and it kind of limits the topics of discussion.

Join a club that is relevant to your interests, or something. Go to a party and have a drink with some of the mates you mentioned. Go to a local pub and have a drink. In the US, it's incredibly easy to make friends at university, I imagine it's the same atmosphere in Scotland. Or maybe that's the issue- perhaps your culture is different and you're not assimilating.
#39
This sounds terrible. I'm sorry, OP.

Maybe just try to go out on your own? If your roommate wants to sit inside and play video games all day, fine. Try walking to a bar or other local establishment and talking to people. You've got a story to tell, that's for sure. Maybe someone will be sympathetic and invite you out some time?
