Hello, so I'm about to get a Gibson SG hopefully just after Christmas, and I'm wondering what amps I can for that compliment the SG and help me blare out some beautiful crisp, , punchy rock tones ALA Foo Fighters, dirty notes vis-a-vis Queens of The Stone Age, distinct overdriven melody such as the likes that Led Zep's Paige would call home and all the way down to cleaner bright notes with a hint of overdrive which would whet John Frusciante's appetite.

Basically I'm after a good amp that goes well with an SG and lets me play along to Rock's greats.

So far I'm on a half-broken Marshall 15W with some digital effects.. Which is pretty pe-ew... But I do really really like the overdrive I can get out of it paired with my Epi SG.. Just a shame about the almost non-existant sustain and overblown muddiness out of it.

Unfortunately money is an object so let's not jump straight into "VOX AC30 WITH THE FOLLOWING PEDALS" haha.

Thanks chaps.

what budget do you have?
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

Vox AC30 with the following pedals...

OK just kidding...Derek Trucks, of the Allman Brothers, uses a SG with a Fender Super Reverb. Many metal players have used them with Marshall amps, as well as Peaveys, Mesas, you name it.

Don't know what you'll find for your price range, but a good tube amp is hard to beat. IF that's out of your range, I'm sure some of the other guys with experience using some of the more modern solid state options will be around with some tips. I haven't used a solid state amp since around 1985 or so...except for a couple of 10 watt practice amps...if that's what you need, Peavey Trans Tube seems to sound pretty decent, Gorilla and RMS are two others I've used that did pretty good.
Hmmm...I wonder what this button does...

I currently play my SG Standard through a Fender Supersonic 22 and can go from B.B. King to Santana/Moore esque sustain to the thickest stoner metal tone by playing with the amp and guitar controls. That will set you back $1400 CA though. In your price range, I would look at the newer Roland Cubes because that is a lot of amp for little money. Never played, but I like what I heard.

check out a crate vintage club 30, i think it sounds great with my gibson sg special.

A JCM2000 DSL would sound great, and I liked my Triple Rec with my SG. Honestly the SG Standard sounds great, the pickups are very clear (57's if I'm not mistaken). I currently run a Fender HRD with all my distortion coming from pedals. Sounds great for straight rock. It can handle the Foo Fighters any day.

Are you playing with any other people? If yes, go for a JCA50 and a cab. If no, I'd go for a POD and a nice speaker.

Well QOTSA and Foo Fighters actually do use AC30s but they (QOTSA especially) put a lot of effects through them.

I wouldn't do that however. A DSL 2000 is a better option. If you can find it used it's cheap, especially when you consider it can cover a lot of ground with no need to spend hundreds on pedals and effects to get your drive tone.

The blackstar HT-5 is a great option or maybe you could stretch for an Orange OR15 or AC15 if you went used

yeah they're hard to beat for the money

maybe a bit on the heavier/more modern side for a lot of the tones he wants (though it'd be excellent for the heavier tones)

laney vc30 might be worth a try, but it sort of has the opposite problem from the jet city- it'll be great for the lower gain tones but will struggle for the heavier ones.

Thanks for the suggestions, the Marshall DSL 2000 looks pretty good, any others?

The Matrix V400 (something like that) would be a badass choice as well. You'll need to buy a cab, but that head has some serious kit for the price.

I'd Second JCA amps. The only reason I sold mine off is because I moved on to other amps and at this point in my life, amp space is not a luxury I have haha. I liked mine a lot better than my Mesa, but that was after an OT upgrade and all new tubes. But even before that, it worked wonders for me.

i owned a JCA20 a JCA2112RC a JCA50, and i didn't like any of them and i had several DOA's on the 2112RC's. they all went through seven different cabs and i was way underhyped. IMO.

most people seem to love them and i don't. i have played soldanos but to be they are galaxys apart from JCA.

but YMMV

As a Jim 2000 dsl owner I'd say it's perfect. However wait for the jcm version. The new DslH and Dslc kinda suck imo

peavey class 30 / 50 or delta blues could be a good thing for you.
