What is good guitar solo tone for you, what makes it good, what are some examples of good tone?

I for one do not like the tone of Jimmy Page, i find it rather nasally sounding, but alot of people like and want that tone.

I really like the tone of Peter Green, it doesn't sound harsh on the ears and has this liquid quality that is really responsive.

There is no best tone. Only the one that needed for that particular song which is why Jimmy Page's tone works for him and not for something like Megadeth and vice versa

What ever sounds the best and cuts through the mix so that it is heard above the other instruments
For punk, this

For metal this

If you just want someone to mind **** you this song

But it is all relative to the type of music and what you personally like

Definitely seconded Dream Theater, and staying within metal, Opeth and Paradise Lost have always been my reference points for an amazing lead/solo tone. All three have common points - they sound bright but with a certain warmth, are very clear and articulate, and most of all sound truly epic.

Jimmy page is my favorite guitarist but I do not like his tone. Its all a matter of taste, some of my favorite tones are Stevie Ray Vaughans which is essentially just a Tubescreamer that boosts the mids to help cut through the mix while adding a little color to the tone.

Other Lead Tones I like:
David Gilmour (generally a big muff variant for a lot solo work)
Derek Trucks
Marc Ford when with the Black Crowes (generally a Analogman Sunlion (Sunface Fuzz + the Beano Boost)

there are a ton I have that I love and for specific songs too but just too many to remember.
