Remember when 'lol' was a genuine expression of your amusement? What happened to that? When did 'lol' become this scornful sort of 'haha okay then, dick' retort?

I used to not do that because I thought it was dumb.

When did 'lol' become this scornful sort of 'haha okay then, dick' retort?
I started doing this when everyone else started doing it and I think everyone else started doing it because I made them realize doing it was dumb. Not to toot my own horn or anything.

have any of you read books on the philosophy of modern speech and text? Like they'll analyse the different facets of the word troll and despite how valid it is it's so ****ing cringe

I wince every time I hear someone say "troll" IRL
they're coming to take me away
ha-haaa

^yee. It says 'alright, that WAS funny so 'haha' sounds too robotic, inauthentic, but 'hahah' shows I'm human'

I think lol died as an expression of actual laughter maybe 5 years ago and since then its decline in popularity has lead to it being used sarcastically.

Around the time it was used sardonically to mock those who used it in regular speech/typing without irony. So quite soon after it was introduced to modern vernacular, really.
#31
Does anyone think it's weird to use acronyms in the first place to symbolize laughter? Like an idea like that wouldn't seem to fly nowadays, but we still use em because we're used to it.
#32
It really depended on whether you were using the internet from 2000-2005. Some of you who claimed to have never used it probably discovered the internet at the tail-end of its usage, you are what they call newfags
