was wondering if someone could recommend some gear (amps, amp settings, pedals) for someone looking to play 1990s alternative rock (Sponge, Local H, Beck, Sonic Youth)/grunge (Nirvana, Alice In Chains)/punk (Ramones, Sex Pistols, Eight Bucks Experiment)... as well as lo-fi sounding pedals/amp settings

i really want to capture the sound Sponge had on their album For All The Drugs In The World, or the sound that Tripping Daisy had on their cover of Jump Into The Fire from The Craft soundtrack... thanxs in advance

For grunge, I really dig a Fenderish amp with a good overdrive pedal in front. I get some really sludgey, thick grunge outta that sorta set up.
I also dig single coil pups or P90s for grunge. Humbuckers may have more output, but single coils retain more definition through the sludge. If you want a Nirvana- ish tone, Mustangs and Jaguars are where its at, its all in the snappy quack. For the first week I had my Mustang, no matter what I played it sounded Nirvana-ish to me, it was weird.
If I could only have one pedal to play grunge music, I'd take a Boss Blues Driver. Don't let the name fool you, it has plenty of gain on tap to make a glorious noise with a Fender Twin.
So, altogether, my ideal grunge set up would be; single coil, 24" scale Fender>Boss BD2> Fenderish amp.

You may want a fuzz pedal for Mudhoney, a wah for Alice in Chains, a chorus for Nirvana, a good tuner for Soundgarden, a delay for Sonic Youth...and a recycling bin for stp cds
Fender Mustang/Derfenstein DST> Boss Power Wah> Pedal Monsters Klone> Bogner Uberschall> Walrus Audio Janus> Randall RM20> Line 6 M9> Randall RM20

Seconding the preference for P90s, but even HBs will work- see Jerry Cantrell & Kim Thayil.

P-90s would work, but I think a medium output HB would be my choice. Something like a Pearly Gates

I was JUST looking at Thayil's rig rundown on Premiere Guitar's site, and apparently, he uses everything from stock Teles to Guilds modified with hot DiMarzios, depending on which song he's playing and if he's the only guitarist on the song.

So it really depends on what you're trying to play.
