A piano with a full orchestra.

I think it's great combined with just strings, great with just woodwinds and off course great on it's own.

With piano it always feel the orchestra + piano, especially if there's a lot of virtuosic piano stuff. It sounds too much individualistic, and take away from the beauty of all the parts make the sum, anyone agree?

Can you suggest me a piece where it works nicely?

Are you listening to piano concertos? Because literally the whole point is virtuosity and a dialogue with the orchestra.

well, my point was kind of that I love songs that show off the piano, because then it means I get to show off, not some lame first chair bassoonist you know

I understand the point, and yes I mean piano concertos.

I guess what I dislike is that I like the beauty of simplicity in each voice, but really come too live when timbres are meshed nicely. The piano I hear as a complete part far too often, than a melodic interplay.

As I said, I like it at the parts when it's just with small parts of the orchestra, or a soloist on top.

Hmm, maybe your point is why I dislike it then. I like showoff, but I find the orchestra's sound so nice without it.

I guess I should just accept it's there.

If you ever played in front of an orchestra, must feel nice hehe.

yeah it really is. it's for sure one of my biggest regrets, if not my biggest, of not taking piano seriously.

It seems that way because piano is a solo instrument while all the others can be written tutti.
A bit avantgarde but this piece is a good example of piano becoming one with the rest.

Or this (they use harpsichord in this performance but it's often done with piano I'm just too lazy to find one :p)

I totally agree. There are two versions of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. One has orchestral accompaniment and the other is solo piano. The solo piano one is like... so much better. At least in my opinion and thousands of other people. I guess it's all a matter of preference though.
