Hi there, I have some troubles figuring out how to pick this riff:

E |-------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------|
G |-------------------------------|
D |-------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------|
E |--------------------2----------|
B |--0M-0M-0M-1h-0--1M----1M-4M---|

----------------------------------------|-------------------------------|
----------------------------------------|-------------------------------|
----------------------------------------|-------------------------------|
----------------------------------------|-------------------------------|
----------------------------------------|-------------------------------|
--------------------5--------------8----|--------------------2----------|
--0M-0M-0M-1h-0--4s----4M-7M-0M-7M------|--0M-0M-0M-1h-0--1M----1M-4M---|

-------------------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------------------|
--------------------5--------------8--------11---|
--0M-0M-0M-1h-0--4s----4M-7M-0M-7M----0--10M-----|

First bar is 9/8, second bar 12/8, third bar 9/8 again and fourth bar 15/8.

Would you play this riff using a strictly alternate picking or what?

Thanks!

Given that it's a Dream Theater riff I would bet a substantial amount of money that the original is all alternate picked, and I really so no reason not to do the same. There's not going to be any benefit to doing anything else as far as I can see.

Definitely strict alternate picking. That's how Petrucci does it. Also, it's very hard to play riffs like that, with that kind of speed, using anything other than alternate picking.

It's not at all inconceivable that this could be played with downpicking relatively easily; it's slower than most hardcore downpicking songs. It's just really unlikely given that we know who it's by and that Petrucci's style of playing is really well documented.

After some practice I would say that a strictly alternate picking with this riff is not a big deal and I'm quite sure JP does in the same way.

Thank you
