I got myself a pair of fingerpicks for bass playing inspired by Robbie Merrill (having been re-discovering Godsmack, who were my favourite band at the age of 10) and noticed straight away, having apparently missed this issue beforehand, that I no longer had any real ability to mute the strings below the one I was playing when I was doing anything faster than about quarter notes. The first solution would be to admit that fingerpicks for bass are a terrible idea, the second to never use the top three strings (I'm pretty sure this is Merrill's solution...), but what's the third? Which is to say, is there any feasible way to mute the lower strings while playing normal bass parts with fingerpicks?
Left hand muting is your friend
