A local luthier/player asked me the other day "When was the last time you graduated from your music?" I began thinking as I was playing, and I now tend to notice that when improvising, I just tend to play the same licks over and over and can't seem to add versatility. I have been playing for 7+ years and can play any cover (Zeppelin, Hendrix, Clapton, Skynyrd, John Mayer, etc.) However, I am all self taught and have no lessons under my belt.

What do you guys recommend that will enable me to make my playing more versatile so when I improvise solos, everything doesn't sound the same

That's your idea of "any cover"?
There's no such thing; there never was. Where I am going you cannot follow me now.
