There were many good albums this year but none of them really blew me away :/
The new Darkspace was the only album I was excited for and it let me down so I guess I'll go with this:

New Revocation was good too. Still need to listen to it more thoroughly, plus I'm not very familiar with their earlier work so I'm not sure how it stacks up.

EDIT: Pallbearer too, can't believe I forgot them.

Yes sir. There's plenty there to sink your teeth into. Like I said, I will be toning it down. I think there's a few I just threw on there just for show without any regard for safety of my fellow metal forum patrons.

I do not wish to incur Edguy on anyone. Not even Kyto.

My biggest problem with choosing AOTY is I listen to so much that I forget what year they were released. Like the first 1/4 of that list seems like 2013 albums. It's been a loooong year...

Also, it's depressing that I recognize/have listened to pretty much every one of those albums. My life

I thought Anubis Gate's Horizons is top-notch as they always are, despite line-up changes. I highly recommend it if you guys enjoy Prog/Power Metal, although I have my doubts given the large number of Extreme Metal bands noted above (which many I already agree are very good).
#19
I literally cannot not pick Incantation any time they release an album

It's in my contract, Severed. Not that you would know anything about legal obligations

Also, I'm drunk. But that's irrelevant.

@Helloween4Ever: Well I don't know what kind of drunks you've encountered but those are the only ones I've met/seen.

Also, forgot to mention I enjoyed Ne Obliviscaris this year.

EDIT: What did everyone enjoy about there favourite releases this year? For me, I think Anubis Gate definitely have that whole thematic development thing down and they use some rather extensive layers of synths that really help the atmosphere.

As for NeO, well I'm a big fan of Melodic Black Metal and they do a particularly good job of it when they do.

I remember that album as being suuuper catchy. Like almost pop/prog. When you have time you should check out Dystopia's latest album if you haven't. I feel like it is in the same vain although it's less proggy and is more a heavy/prog blend (I guess).

Also I might change my pick to Dir en Grey's new album . I've never cared for them but I've been addicted to it recently. Still honeymoon phase though, so I'm not sure how well it will hold up in a month.

Like I said in AnnihiSSlater's mix thread, Falls of Rauros are one of those bands that I find keep getting better at finding their own sound. Consistently getting better with each release.

I wrote them off without listening to them. Not a big fan of the modern prog/power metal scene, but I can give them a go and see if anything's changed.

That is not the Dystopia I was hoping it was.

I also checked them out before this whole endeavor thinking they were the crust/doom Dystopia. This is when I remembered Dystopia have been disbanded for years and a few of the members are dead.

The Hyle? The Wounded Kings? Slough Feg?

If you want I could shorten the list down to the doom/heavy metal acts.

It can be sure. But I don't see the point of appealing to an album that is considered the best of the worst. A good album on its own is debatable, a debate I'm not suited for. His music is always contextual and without any knowledge of the mythology he speaks of, I feel that I'm not fully appreciating what he's doing with it. This same rule applied to Sol Austan, Umskiptar, and Fallen too (Maybe Fallen) or most his culturally focused albums. Over my head, and I'm willfully ignorant.

I liked it though, but I can't say it held my attention musically. Whatever floats your boat though. No complaints from me if you like it. More power to you.

That Grand Magus album sounded really killer, hadn't heard of them before. This thread also made me realize that In Solitude had an album out last year and that's amazing too.
