Hi all,

I do all my songs by ear.

However, since I started playing bass, I notice this is really hard. (Some records the bass is not really present in the mix).

Have you guys got some tricks up your sleeves I could use?

I don't know whether it's something your ear attunes to with practice, I find it a lot easier to pick out the a bassline in a song now compared to when I started a few years back.
Agree there are some recordings where it's hard to distinguish though.
Using headphones work better for me than listening through speakers.

If you know the chords and the changes, it can sometimes make it easier to "hear" the bass notes. But if the bass is buried in the mix, it is going to be very difficult. It is something we all have to live with.
