I'm looking for black metal bands that are more along the lines of death metal or classic black like Venom. Can never find any, the bands I know of just aren't heavy enough for the name black metal gets. Everyone is always talking about how extreme it is but there are never any bands other than Venom I like. Recommendations? and I know, Venom isn't extreme that's just the one I know of that I like a lot

1 - Black Metal and Death Metal are different genres... so you can't have Black Metal that is Death Metal. You have Blackened Death Metal which is a cross between the two.

2 - Venom isn't "classic Black Metal" they were a Speed Metal band, just because they coined the name that doesn't make them black metal.

3 - Rec Thread.

Do you really want to listen to Black Metal at all? If you can't enjoy Transylvanian Hunger the genre might just not be for you. Black Metal has never been "heavy" fast and aggressive, abrasive and hateful yes.

Heavy. Not so much. Heavy is not the be-all-end-all of Metal.

Actually they can be considered as being among the progenitors of the genre, in the first wave category. Maybe you should consult the rec thread yourself.

First Wave Black Metal

The first wave of Black Metal consisted of various disparate bands who took the ideas presented in Heavy Metal and Speed / Thrash Metal one step further. This marked the formation of the underground. The pioneering bands and notable works in this genre are as follows:

Bathory - s/t ~ The Return ~ Under the Sign of the Black Mark ~ Blood Fire Death
Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom ~ Blood Upon the Altar
Bulldozer - The Day of Wrath
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales ~ Emperor’s Return ~ To Mega Therion
Hellhammer - Satanic Rites ~ Apocalyptic Raids (1990 A.D.)
Mayhem - Deathcrush
Mercyful Fate - Melissa ~ Don’t Break the Oath
N.M.E - Unholy Death
Root - Zjevení / The Revelation ~ Hell Symphony
Sarcofago - INRI ~ Rotting
Sodom - Obsessed by Cruelty ~ Persecution Mania
Venom - Welcome to Hell ~ Black Metal ~ At War With Satan
Vulcano - Bloody Vengeance

I'd disagree thoroughly with that.

Venom is definitely black metal. They paved the way for speed, thrash, death, and other types of metal genres. And damn, I'm not sure if I "even want to listen to the genre" yet because I don't know many bands from the genre. By the way, I never said heavy was the be-all, end-all of metal

Thanks for the recommendations I got

If you like Venom then you should probably try Bathory, Bulldozer, Celtic Frost, and early Sodom. Evil speed metal sounds like what you're looking for, but someone mentioned Beherit and they might peak your interest along with some others from the rec list.

My favourite part of this thread so far is when the OP said that Venom are definitely black metal (despite sounding basically nothing like the majority of black metal) and then admitting he doesn't really know many black metal bands.

Cuz you'd think you'd want to actually listen to some black metal before pretending to know what is is. Maybe that's just me.

It's pretty common for most people to call Venom black metal. From them having the look of black metal to people like Sam Dunn touting them as the first ever black metal band, and them influencing a fair amount of extreme metal themselves, it's pretty understandable. Hell, even the guys in a lot of the "second wave" consider them the true black metal bands and all that.
#15
They aren't prototypical OF Black Metal though, that's my point. Yes they influenced the genre, not gonna argue that, but everyone I've spoken to has called it Thrash, Speed or Heavy Metal. Listen to Venom and then Darkthrone or Summoning or Burzum and the similarities are mainly thematic, not sonic.

So if you're going into Black Metal having only really listened to Venom and assuming that Black Metal sounds like that... well it just isn't gonna work.

Venom is definitely Black Metal.

They still suck dick though and I stand by that belief.

OP, try Ildjarn, Diocletian and Conqueror if you're not a pussy

Black Metal isn't really meant for what you are asking, though. but you seem to be wanting a first wave kind of sound, which is relatively easy to find.

Beherit and Blasphemy are good suggestions as well.

If you want "heavy" I'd look into Black/Doom bands like Woods of Ypres, and early Opeth/Katatonia, and Forgotten Tomb.

But for death/black Dissection, Behemoth, Sacramentum, pretty much most Swedish black metal bands fuse the two often adding melodeath style guitar harmonies.

Also read the book "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult" tons of great bands in there, especially old school stuff like Von, Blasphemy, Sabbat, early Sodom, early Kreator, Master's Hammer, Sarcofago.

Black Metal is all about dark atmosphere not being the "heaviest" that's more of a doom metal characteristic.
Someone is wrong on the internet. Only you can help.

did you just call Opeth and Katatonia Black/Doom Metal?

This is bad

Then don't listen to it. Besides, the TS wanted heavy black metal. This fits.

I meant Black/Death for early Opeth (first three albums) and Black/Doom for early Katatonia (first two albums).

This is some pretty good stuff, a lot better than everything else I've heard. Only newer black metal band I like is Dark Funeral and they're not that recent. Haha looks like I'm more interested in the early stuff
#35
Speaking in a manner of history, Celtic Frost can easily be sited as the first proto black metal band (including Hellhammer) with their sonic palette of chromatic progressions, riff focused structure, and general evil vibe. Opeth and katatonia have nothing to do with black metal, sonic or otherwise

I agree also with progbass's endorsement of Hessian culture. Apfelwein makes this world a better place. Right now, incidentally.

agree. venom is also one of my favorites bands. his performance was crazy
