Throughout the 20th century, single-color paintings have played an important role. Avant-garde thinking led painters to explore the use of solid color panels beginning in the 19th century with comments by the French writer Alphonse Allais and his acquaintance Paul Bilhaud when Bilhaud exhibited an all black painting he named “Negroes Fight in a Tunnel” (Combat de Nègres das un tunnel).
