In 1953 Les Paul himself requested a black Les Paul modal guitar from Gibson. The first Les Paul guitars were all gold tops. The black prototype was sent to Les for approval and in 1954 the "Black Beauty" Les Paul modal was released by Gibson. Over the next 20 years that original prototype guitar was Les's "Frankenstein" guitar on which numberous changes and experiments were done. That guitar is going to be auctioned off on February 19,2015 in NYC. See link.
