The harmonics are off time, but we're not judging the execution or production, are we? Just the songwriting.

It's pretty clear you've got a very direct idea of where you'd like the song to progress in terms of the tempo it builds as it goes along. I think very much of that mid-2000's indie style like the Strokes/the Bravery / Hot Hot Heat in the terms of the fact that you're very aware of the dynamic of your given piece. I don't think you sound like any of them, but that consciousness you seem to have does.

Perhaps cut certain sections down to one or two measures, or cut a measure or two short here and again to keep the song fresher and less predictable. Otherwise, I'm a big fan of the choices you made that kept the attitude of the song alive throughout.

Find good ways to make it seem less long/tedious, and it's great. Go Badgers.

2 - "Great Art" (Faux)

You should invest in a metronome, or at least record along to a click track. Honestly, there's a lot of potential for that 'lo fi and i don't get a shit yo" aesthetic here, but the fact that things are rather off time makes it hard to judge as a composition, even with the idea of a vocal rhythm with the chord changes.

I'd probably be really into this if it were re-recorded with a click track. Don't make it too perfect, though. Check out "kind of a long way down" by I Hate Myself and you'll see what I mean.

3 - "Anchors" (FoOltz)

Immediately I'm reminded of a guitar/harpsichord rip off of Clocks by Coldplay, so I'd find a way of matching that intro phrasing to match your verses. It'd just help with continuity, too.

Overall, the construction of this was pretty strong. Definitely, though, work could be done as far as ideas with the drums to try and make some more clear distinction between the verse and the chorus. The beats themselves are fine, but a clearer fill/transition should be made as an obvious marker that the listener should feel the change.

Great showing, though. This is a solid composition.

4 - "Nice Day For A Mess" (ultimate-slash)

Justin Vernon with Guitar Pro was my first thought. It's not bad, just kind of meh in my eyes, but I'm definitely more of a prog player. Plus, being a Wisconsin native, I'm a little over that whole idea.

Once the actual singing kicked in, I was way over it, though. This was my favorite of the thread so far. Pacing was perfect. Made me feel stupid for typing the previous paragraph but I'm a bit too gone into my bottle of wine to deal with backspacing.

5 - "STWA" (Skinny91)

This song is like Post Rock without the payoff of the crescendocore signature style. It's not bad, but it's just like, not different. Skip from 30 seconds in to anywhere else in the song, and you don't feel like you've missed anything.

Reminded me of Quiet by This Will Destroy You, but without the exciting parts.

6 -"Leather" (MapOfYourHead)

You win, because I'm a sucker for vamping with dissonance. I was raised on the Sonic Youth. Sue me.

Available by Mail has some fantastic ideas. You should develop that much further.

Woot, unbiased feedback!

Thanks for the compliments and thanks more for the criticisms, and don't worry about criticizing off-time sections, I shouldn't be settling for subpar guitar work anyway. The fingerpicked sections are terrible. And yeah I'm usually better about trimming fat off of a song, not sure why this one ended up at five minutes long, it definitely didn't need to be in its current form.

Skinny's song is good and I agree with this totally, but I will say that you should check out Skinny's older stuff; it's along this line of style but it's more fully developed and it's all great.

Anyway, a bunch of things: Nico holy shit I just realized you forgot Boooytsi's song, there still isn't a poll, and other than that nice job on the thread

Also ultimate-slash's vocals are great even though the constant main piano line that's all about the same volume the whole time gets a bit distracting, but still that song's awesome. And also Foltz's and mapofyourhead's songs are both some of the best they've done. I like Faux's song too and his lyrics are great.

Yeesh, my thoughts are all run-on sentences by this time at night.

I Don't Even Know What This Is Anymore:

Love the groove to this, it feels shoegazey to me at the start. Like the variation of sections but I think it could be a little more streamlined tonally at times.

Great Art:

Cool vibe but I think it definitely would have benefited from some fast punk drums and bass, even programmed stuff if you don't have access to other players. Your voice fits really nicely to the style and I also think the mellow section is a great complementary section to the main feel of the track.

Anchors:

Can definitely feel the nautical theme. Nice melody too. Not much to say on this but I really like it.

(Also as a non effecting factor to my vote I really like the mix/recording of this track).

Nice day for a mess:

I like how the vocals and piano fit together on this track. I think you could have taken the hi-hats out of the start to let it be a bit more dynamic, but for the rest of the song the drums fit great. Cool far away vocals at the end as well.

Leather:

Very atonal and eerie, I like that. I think it could be bit more dynamic overall but I think you succeeded in getting the vibe you were going for really well.

Sour:

Good selection of chords but I would like to hear vocals/a melody over the top.

___

I voted Nice Day for a Mess in the end, but good stuff everyone.

Thanks for the criticisms, it wasn't my best work and I agree with the stuff you've said. I had a song I wasn't particularly happy with but I think its important to finish tracks in case they become something more (I felt pretty uninspired by the whole thing haha)

That is really kind, thanks. I'm going to try and get back on it, I've had to long of a break from writing haha.

Thanks for the feedback skinny and rooster!
I also voted for ultimate slash, very well written.

voted for slash.

also, booysti, if you're gonna be recording stuff regularly, I'd recommend investing in a microphone. I have a cheap usb microphone and it works pretty well with audacity.

Thanks for the crits, an bear in mind there's meant to be singing over my track but everyone IGNORED MEEEEE. But, I've embraced the heartache and moved on.

Yeah a simple usb Mic (like a rock band mic for example) can do wonders.

I'm undecided between whywefight, FoOltz and ultimate-slash for now. But there's still 17 hours left to vote so I'll give all the songs another listen in a bit.

EDIT: Voted for whywefight. 3 way ties ftw
EDIT2: Apparently not...
