I want to make my rosewood fretboard look more like bubinga so I bought some orange colortone stain. Right now it's lacquered, do I need to remove that first, and would that be done by sanding?
Lacquered? That's a rarity. Are you sure you don't mean the back of the neck?
Well it's a rickenbacker 325 copy and it has a clear coat on the fretboard, there's not much more information about it than that
if someone put lacquer on a rosewood fretboard they have no idea what they are doing but yeah post us a photo I'd love to see. I was tempted to on a guitar fretboard I scalloped to return the shine and so forth of the rosewood (i was 17) and realized I just needed to polish the wood with really fine sand paper.
