Simple question. Should I go with the combo, 50 Watt head, or 100 Watt head? And would an orange 2x12 with V30's go good with the head?

Do you want 3 separate EQ controls or do you want a resonance control?

If you get the 100S, which is much more expensive, you can have both.

Vintage 30 works well with any Peavey or EVH 5150.

I've got the budget for it and a cab. I just wanted to know if there were tonal differences between the three. I play a wide variety of rock and metal and I've heard that this amp has decent cleans and is VERY versatile for rock/metal.

I haven't tried the 50W and 100W heads side-by-side, but I remember being really impressed with the 100W when I tried it when it first came out and being very underwhelmed with the 50W when I tried it. Keep in mind, there were several years between my tests and my tastes may have just changed and I wouldn't like the 100W as much now, either. I just haven't seen the larger head in a store in quite a while, so I couldn't say.

Lots of guys really seem to dig the 50W, though. Generally, if there was an amp I liked and it was available in 100W or 50W, I'd go for the lower wattage, assuming they sounded the same and the features weren't wildly different. The price difference definitely makes me scratch my head between the two EVH heads, the features aren't so vast that they should make up $800 in differences

FWIW, I'm a big fan of the original 5150.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

There was a comparison of the two but the person responsible for this has removed the clips from his dropbox.

The only semi-relevant comparison I found without a lot of digging is this...

The 100S is a bit of a different beast than the 100, so not really helpful...

Go find both in a shop and try them? Or flip a coin.

this may not be a common thought, but i played the 100 watt version and i liked my Fryette Sig:X better. i only paid $1050 used for it. also three channel. but they are very different and that is just MY opinion.
