A few weeks ago everyone was predicting the rise of far right parties in Europe in response to the trouble of our times.

However a far-left anti austerity party has just come to power in Greece, and big rallies were held for another anti-austerity party in Spain today, specifically using Merkel as a figure to rally against.

Do you think Europe is going to swing left or right in the coming few years?

A non-late 1800s version of Capitalism is clearly the most successful and efficient system. RIP Greece

Yeah Europe will probably continue its current trend of decline towards proud mediocrity.

In Greece the right wing party won 'cause they were the only party whose program consisted in "let's not pay taxes to the EU and be socialists in a modern, original way".

Even with the socialist part, they ended up winning the elections with the almost absolute majority in good part because of the votes of the leftists.

Why?
People don't even have food ffs, nobody wants to pay taxes to germany.
And I can't blame them.
I actually hope they do good so that somebody decides to adopt the same political strategy in Italy.

Go Greece, make us proud

ps. capitalism won't die at this rate.
Name's Luca.

Lol capitalìsm is not dead. The moment when greece announced their plans they plummeted again in all the markets they rely on. Capitalism is exactly what will force greece to go through the measures or else they will go bankrupt and worse.

I think there will be a mix of left and right, depending on the country and the exact nature of the problems within that country.

e.g. places like Sweden seem to be turning more to the right because of high levels of immigration and political correctness, Greece went left because of financial problems
I have nothing important to say

I'm not sure Greece turned left. They turned anti-EU, and I can't blame them for that. But Syriza formed a coalition with a rightist populist party with which they have nothing in common but being against the EU paternalism.

As for turing right because of high levels of immigration: in Germany, we currently deal with a rightist anti-Islam movement ("Pegida", "patriotic Eurpeans against the islamisation of the occident"). They are strong in Saxony where few immigrants live, and they are overwhelmed by the opposition in places with lots of immigrants. In Frankfurt, one of the "most immigrant" places in Germany, they suffered a crushing defeat against a broad coalition of immigrants and non-immigrants who told those xenophobes to **** off. Xenophoby seems to be strongest where there are few immigrants.

Got to agree there. Where I live there is a mostly white and British population, yet I know lots of people who love UKIP and like to whinge about foreigners.

Left does not truly exist.

It's something people came up with to feel better with themselves.

I could really use 20 euro's now, and I bet none of you left people would give it to me.

Left does not exist. Only when you can miss 20 you'd give to feel better, otherwise no. Equal sharing does not exist.

If anyone with more than 2 guitar's has a Marxist view, he should give away 1 to any person right now on UG who has none. Will never happen in a million years.

Equal sharing, ye right.

Anyway sorry for the rage post, but Capitalism has not come to be in effect on a whim. I don't see capitalistic behavior as a choice, but an extension of the way we are.

I see this as the SAW movies. People talk and talk, but when they really have to give up half of what they own, well...

Socialism is not going up to someone on the street and asking for £20.

It's redistributing money from people who have too much money, and giving the £20 to services that will be equally useful to everyone.

Darren you're having trouble understanding very basic principles of Marxism. Actually not even just Marxism, I think the distinction between public, private and personal property is more or less universal. But then again it's not like opinions like yours are formed through any form of reseach or undestanding of the topic in question.

ETR, it's not really that either. Well, that's a part of it but not the defining one.

I'm willing to bet that the gap between a millionaire and middle class person, is as much as a middle class person and a country living in poverty, most likely worse (ie not even water/food etc.)

So why are you on the internet? Go distribute your salary over a dozen poor kids in a shitty country.

EDIT:
^^ I do not need research to tell when people say one thing, but do another thing.

When reality comes around, the majority of people will choose for themselves always.

If you'd get 10 million euro's now, would you give to the state to distribute? I have a hard time believing that.
