Do you believe the government has a right to restrict and control the information that reaches the general population through regular channels?

Discuss.

No especially not current affair news.

There should be anonymity and restricted information for things like accused criminals, public juries, sensitive military secrets but everything else should be clear and transparent - that goes for stuff like minutes of meetings, public finances, etc.

Yes they have, because we elected them to do so...
Also there's no other possibility for news agencies and the government than holding back information due to the sheer enormous amount of information/news there is.

Or to put it in Jerry Seinfeld's words, 'Don't you find it amazing that the amount of newsworthy events that happen always exactly fit on the pages the newspaper has?' (not the exact wording)

EDIT: exact wording: 'It's amazing that the amount of news that happens in the world every day always just exactly fits the newspaper.'

Yes I do. I sucks but oh well. Look at how people act when things like the flu or ISIS bs comes up on the news. Now imagine how people would respond if the news was told to broadcast about aliens or something like the government being warned about 9/11 or an asteroid hitting earth possibly in exactly one year.

Okay, but let's look at how they would act if the news presented these issues in a way other than "NEWS FLASH: THIS IS WHAT'S TRYING TO KILL YOU TODAY!"

i don't want big government messing around with my news. the manipulation of information should be left to the private sector.
#14
FFS why would they be allowed to do that?

Unless they own the means of communications, which in most cases they don't, they don't have any right to dictate what the media's can or must transmit.

Don't really have a straightforward opinion. Withholding facts can protect the populace but also has the potential for deceit or at least what looks like it.

But really, one word: WIKILEAKS.

They are allowed to do that atm to a certain extent. And governments generally do own the network that the media uses, or they sell the rights to that network (concessions etc). In either case they can demand things.

That is why I voted yes, I and many many others could receive all info of what really happens but unfortunately many many others would just go berserk.

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Basically Neo is a little man who would live under a totalitarian, exploitative government giving him safety.

By killing those who his opponents are likely to rally around.

Oh look you took up some random quote and act like it has any meaning. We live in the real world Rapture and know that sometimes governments have to do bad things for the right reasons. And I would not be living under a totalitarian, exploitative government, I would be in said totalitarian, exploitative government.

Here's what society has taught me.

Democracy = Oligarchy
Freedom of Speech = Selective Liberty
Free Press = Capitalism's Third Leg (because ads, yay)
State Press = Socialism's Third Leg (because heaven forbid the system is inadequate)
American Free Markets = Corporate Monopoly
European Free Markets = Subsidies & Outsourcing
War = Evil
Peace = Privilege
Money = Power

Atleast I got the last one right.

It probably wouldn't me mainstream if that's what compromised a TV broadcaster's daytime schedule.

Transparency creates accountability, and if the public scrutinizes the government then they're less likely to do stupid bullshit that makes them want to cover up information in the first place.

I'm okay with certain things being kept quiet for a brief period until more information is obtained, and also to protect the privacy of the accused and other things like Lyle mentioned (I'm agreeing with Lyle, what the hell is going on). But in general, no.

Good post, except: I would say war is evil always, even if necessary for certain means, so I wouldn't agree with the sarcasm; I don't have a problem with state press so long as it isn't the only press a la the USSR (NPR is pretty quality, and my selective exposure to BBC has been quality as well); and here I am nitpicking but American free markets also subsidize and outsource. Also, freedom of speech in the US is pretty consistently open-ended since there are no hate speech laws. The real problem is the SCOTUS decided that corporate monies=free speech.
