I've been looking at the Dark Terror head by Orange and it seems pretty good. I know a lot of people recommend a 5150 cab in general, so would using the Dark Terror for the head be worth it or is there something better for around the same price? I mostly play metal - Devin Townsend/Strapping, Emperor/Ihsahn, Dissection, Gojira, but play a bit of stuff like - Alice in Chains, Serj Tankian, Buckethead.

Any recommendations, or response just to whether the Dark Terror w/5150 would be good is much appreciated.
Thanks!

Peavey 5150 cab or EVH 5150 III cab?

The Peavey 5150 cabs are built good, but have crap speakers in them. What is your budget and what country do you live in?

I'd say my budget is between $1000-$1500 CAD, and I live in Canada.

edit: oh and I should've specified, but the EVH is the only one I could see getting around here.

Look for a used Orange PPC412 or Mesa 4x12. Marshall MF280 or MF400 would be another good combo.
The EVH cab is nice, but because of the speakers it has a more Old School flavor to it

exactly what i would look for. also if you want more of a custom route, avatar or whitebox are reasonable. but the avatar build isn't as nice as my orange and mesa cabs. the MF400 cabs kick ass. also the old peavey cabs with K85's are a killer deal.

I love the Dark Terror. But I wouldn't get one for what you want. It kicks ass for modern alternative dirt tones, but I wouldn't get one to pull off death/extreme metal tones.

Is $1000 your total budget for for amp and cab?

See if you can find a used EVH 5150 III combo if so. You might be able to swing the EVH 5150 III 50W head with a decent 2x12 like an Orange or a Mesa. But I know prices can be steep across the border.

$1000-$1500 is for both the head and cab. And yeah, I found a used 2x12 for $400 (listed $729 at McQuade) so I think I might go for that. I think I'll probably look into finding an EVH III 50W head or perhaps a Mini Dual Rectifier.

My personal opinion is the 5150 III mini slays the Mini Recto in versatility and sound

I'm not crazy about the Mini Rec either.

The Mini Mark V is really cool though.

Since your in Canada check out some traynor cabs. L&M usually has some used ones for a great deal, just picked one up in Oshawa a few weeks back, traynor 4x12 with vintage 30s for $350. Traynor also has a couple of nice 2x12 cabs - YBX212 is a vertical 2x12 with vintage 30s or the dhx212 is a closed back/open back convertible 2x12 with greenbacks.
